Richard Schaefer is a snake, and snakes really don't need much brains to be dangerous.

All of this "he needs a promoter" talk is ******. If a guy is making $1 million - $2 million per fight, that fighter is already at the non-PPV compensation peak. Spence is already at that level going forward. It is highly unlikely that he'd become some $5+ million PPV fighter before beating Thurman. What exactly do you all think a promoter can do for him at this point? Theyre saying he's getting $3.5 million for his next fight, but it'll likely be $2 million. That's what Kovalev got for his first fight with Ward, and more than the second. You all doesn't understand the business. GBP was trying to play him with that offer.
There are few fighters in history who ever had more than one (or two) fights in their careers where the purse was larger than $2 million. These fighters know that. They're not dumb.
Absent some proof of a potential PPV run. Nobody can do any better than the $1 million - $2 million paydays these guys are getting with Al. Just look at Thurman's purses. There are situations (like Danny's w/ HBO) that call for a mixture of forces to get the big fights, but Errol isnt in that situation. So the fights he needs are already on the way. Crawford is the only one that will require some ingenuity.

There are 4 main functions of a boxing promoter, marketing, financing, matchmaking, and operations.
Marketing- In the age of social media fighters are well equipped to do this themselves especially considering these old promoters are terrible at it.
Financing- Only the very successful who can front the money for the event can do this themselves, but those under Haymon management have access to this, so they don't need a promoter to fill this function.
Matchmaking- Same as financing. Haymon gives a couple names with purses and the fighter and his team greenlights the names and purses they're cool with.
Operations- People like Floyd, Cotto, and Canelo used/use Golden Boy for this specific reason. They allowed Golden Boy to co-promote, which their primary role was to handle the logistics of that particular event. This is the only role that promoters play in Haymon fighters that don't have a promoter.
Exceptions: If a fighter with Haymon management feels they need a promoter to handle marketing or matchmaking, then you'll see them sign with a promoter like a lot of foreign fighters or like Danny Jacobs who I guess likes Hearn's matchmaking, marketing, and operational skills.

Beating or stopping Cotto even at this stage in his career would significantly raise any fighters profile.
A highlight reel ko of Cotto would certainly get noticed by casuals and people would actually remember Spences name.
I'm surprised to see so many who think this is a good move.
Because lets face it destroying Peterson instead means less than nothing.
I actually like Spence but he wasn't anywhere near as good
as I expected him to be against Brook.
This is probably down to lack of experience
I actually think Cotto would cause him serious problems maybe even beat Spence.
To those of you saying this isn't a duck.
The kid just turned down a fight with one of the biggest names in the sport who is also an old man to instead fight Lamont Peterson. That doesn't look good and It's certainly not going to help his career.

Besides other boxing nerds.
But you bums aren't where the money is at. The casuals are the target audience.
You clearly have no understanding of marketing and are probably a semi-noob....
What has always been and always will be the most efficient
way to build a fighters profile Is beat the biggest names.
If anybody gets a vicious ko over mayweather, manny or cotto in the near future, that fighter will have his name instantly etched in the history books and gain a MASSIVE fan base regardless if you nerds agree.
Trevor Berbick will forever be known for whoopin Ali.
The Tyson loss is a continution of that story...
Nobody gave a **** about Joshua outside the uk till he beat the ghost of Wlad. And Wlad was garbage anyways.
Why do you think GGG was so hellbent on getting ginge in the ring??
And fighting chinny Pederson instead of Cotto was decided for one of two reasons.
1. Spence and his team are morons
2. Spence shook
He's 27 years and hasn't beaten anybody.
He fights very infrequently.
Nobody has heard of him.
He should have been thanking his lucky stars the Cotto fight fell into his lap.
Now watch how in the coming months this clown will cry about getting "ducked".
