Yea I'd agree with this more than Rogan personally. I want someone saying their take of whats happening (I know people hype or criticize Rogan for how much he does or doesn't know) instead of talking about sh^t that don't matter which is kinda the mantra of the HBO team. They'll talk about old sh^t, they'll talk about future sh^t, they'll talk about some other sh^t, but they seem to spend less time than any other sport commentators I've ever witnessed talking about the sh^t happening in front of them. Its the weirdest f#cking thing & even when they do focus on whats happening in front of them they seem overly protective of whatever narrative they are trying to spin vs both fighters narratives.
Af#ckingmen. I mean the dying part of a lil over the top, but yea boxing needs some non-gray hairs talking about boxing.
And honestly whatever happens with PBC I feel like the PBC commentators will be among the next generation of commentators (I got that Mexican Howard Cosell sounding cat pegged as the next Jim Lampley if HBO is still around) & they aren't many gray hairs among that crowd.
I honestly think this is some awkward attempt at making boxing more mainstream. Granted I bet I hate SAS as much as you, but there is no argument that he's the casual fan bases go to guy (with Skip Bayless) for boxing news or boxing sh^t they should follow.
So while I disapprove of this & its been a sh^tshow to watch I think there angle with him being involved was a good one in theory lol. Thus fair play to them with making a different attempt at the old problem of getting casuals more interested in this new ESPN show & sh^t its still early maybe it works. I'd just bet against it based on what I'm seeing, but I've been betting against SAS for years & its not paid off for me yet so what do I know.
That truly loves the sport angle is the one that gets me appreciating guys no matter what. And its funny that you mention Kellerman cuz I remember when he was some 16 year old dork with his boxing public access show. Thats a mfer who loves the sport (& I don't see him as soul drained as you, I think if anything he's busier now with his mainstream sports show). Al Bernstien comes across as a guy who loves the sport. The former boxers almost gotta love the sport even if it treated them bad at times. Boxing needs less talking heads & more guys who love boxing & can get that love & appreciation of boxing pouring outwardly to the fans like Rogan does, like Robin Black does & like I'm sure many of the other sports I don't watch commentators do along with the boxing guys I mentioned.
When you get more guys like that & can get someone who can excel like Rogan has excelled in MMA in boxing thats one of those lil dumb things that can create big dividends for boxing as a sport.
Again the dying stuff is over the top, but if boxing was more innovative + fan friendly (basically copying the UFC or doing everything the UFC eventually did if they were smarter cuz boxing has been around longer & had dibs on most of the angles the UFC has used to boost up their sport) it would surely be in a better place than it is (& yes yes I know its been a good year, but it coulda been a good year every year if boxing was on top of sh^t better). Eventually someone will realize this sorta sh^t & make a sh^tton of money himself & among his closest partners & boxing will be a more streamlined sport with a higher level of quality control at all levels & be more popular by more people because of it.
I'm optimistic doe.
Boxing is dying a slow death bc of having ancient dweebs in tuxedos providing “color”.

And the addition of Stephen A. smith?! Gag. What an imbecile. To listen to him commentate boxing is like listening to Shannon Sharpe on mma.

He communicates mma specifics well to casuals, and truly loves the sport. Dominic Cruz is another excellent color commentator.
The only time I tune in to listen to boxing commentary is Kellerman. And hbo/ESPN seemed to have drained his soul.

Boxing is still being controlled by corrupt, old dimwits.
If corruption is a part of the game, it needs to be controlled by corrupt, young, relevant marketing geniuses.
It is dying before your eyes.
