So why did he pay the sanctioning fees for fights with Cotto, Khan, Smith and his last fight with GGG?

If he was above belts he would never have embarrassed himself by trying to hang on to the WBC belt for so long that he ended up being forced to relinquish it by the WBC.

The only non title match for Canelo in the last 2 years has been Chavez.

It's hard to say he doesn't need belts when hes challenging for them and making merchandise saying "world champ"
Well that's the thing you are over looking. They have to sell the smith fight to the public and when it comes to smith he was a belt holder and that's how they sold it. Little to no name over here and they promoted it as Canelo returning to 154 for a belt. Cotto was the fight that everyone wanted at the time it got made. That and kovalev vs Ward. Cotto was the linear champion but more importantly he had a fan base. It made business sense to make it. In terms of him needing the belt, the linear belt was attached to the wbc when he fought Cotto but honestly it didn't matter. As long as Cotto didn't come off a lost, they were going to make that fight to begin with. They were trying to make it before Cotto lost to trout as long as he didn't lose. He paid the fees for Cotto but that was before his beef with the wbc. As a educated fan, you should know some fighters don't need belts. Do you really think Mayweather needed a world title for people to buy his fights? Helps sell the fights but he don't need them. If anything, needs an excuse to fight him when it comes to them having belts.

Oh stop. You know what i mean. He doesn't need belts to sell fights. If you can't see that, i cant help you. He's in the mayweather/pacquiao category when it comes to "needing" a belt.

Why do they have to sell the Smith fight? Why Smith, rather than a Charlo, or J rock, or Lara? Like you said "Canelo returning to 154 for a belt". That's the whole purpose of choosing Smith, the belt.
