I think too much emphasis is being put on the "he did it at heavyweight" argument here.

Yes, the big men ARE a special group, but any boxing match has the potential for ANYONE stopping anyone.

And, you have numerous instances of fighters going from lower weights to heavy and having success, so I don't think that in itself is a decent argument in determining greatness in and of itself.

Giving all the respect to Rocky that I can, his record is in no way anywhere near close to Floyd's.

Floyd did it over 2 decades, fighting many more champions and just as many HOF caliber guys.

                And there is something else.

While many point to the fact that Marciano fought more frequently than Floyd, no one is talking about how odd the mark of 49-0 is in context with the era Marciano fought in.

To the point, in an era where it wasn't uncommon to have a career with at least 100 fights, Rocky didn't break 50.

Surely, had he fought as much as his own contemporaries, he would have tasted defeat, and more than once judging by the guys he would have eventually encountered like Johansson, Patterson, Liston, and Ali.

Some could interpret this as a man who saw what was in the pipeline and decided to get out before he took an L. Me, I will take the fighter at his own word, that he wanted simply to go out on top.

But, regardless of the motivation, he missed fighting against guys that he, by all rights, should not have.

Missed on a scale that dwarfs any talk of the few guys Mayweather may have "avoided".

And, unlike Marciano, the guys Floyd DID FIGHT are as good or better than the ones he didn't.

                Advantage (big time): Floyd

dude fought a lot of club fighters, and former middleweights and light heavyweights

he never beat a prime, Elite heavyweight in his entire career

deal with it.....Ezzard Charles was great but past prime, almost 100 fights and started at 160.....Archie Moore lost to every top heavy he fought, and Joe Louis was 175 years old

mayweather beat a dozen lineal champions, over 20 major titlists, been in 26 title fights and won them all, beat more hall of famers, and contenders than Rocky

                    its not even close bro

nor is it even a legitimate debate

It's only a debate at all because some folks are putting a guy we all know was a great heavyweight on an even higher pedestal that in truth he doesn't merit.

No one is aying Rocky was no good.

But, there is a huge problem comparing him the the GOATs or TBEs.
