Stewart was better in the middle divisions. If he had trained Vlad to clinch like that against a really good puncher I doubt Vlad would have found much success. yes Dempsey was a master at the one inch punch so to speak...could hit you in a telephone booth. I would have loved to see Klitsko try to clinch Dempsey, or a prime Tyson for that matter.

Why couldn't Dempsey have beaten Joshua?
Am surprised this is still being debated.

He is simply too small for the super freak heavyweights, nothing more, nothing less.

        How?

Maybe genetics, dedication, you can also train to improve speed.

everything improves. seriously, go back and watch some of those way back when fights. look at how clumsy and wild most of those fights are. how much holding is going on. look at those fights with unbiased eyes.

I guess Tyson was too small also.

Dempsey wasn't too small for the super freak heavyweights of his day.

Jess Willard was 6'6 and threw a LOT more punches than anybody today.

Willard also took a better shot than anybody fighting at heavyweight today.

You'd be broke if you did that.

Those guys back then didn't get tired and could take better shots....and they were a LOT better on the inside, and had no trouble getting there.

Joe Louis had a bum of the month tour

Vlad had a bum of the month CAREER and still managed to get blasted out.

He was KTFO by a professional Golfer

Why couldn't Dempsey have had success against some of today's HW's?

                      He had the attributes.

This one of today's best HW's, who's looking to unify:

Dempsey fought at heavyweight when the average size of top heavies was a lot less than it is today, and there was no interim divisions for men of Dempsey's size. Billy Conn also technically fought at heavyweight, but would you give him a chance against someone like Big George?

Dempsey has the same chance at heavyweight that I'd give to the smaller cruiserweights or larger light heavyweights today. He might win against a certain level of competition, but he'd come up short against the best in the division, since by and large the best in the division not only have a sizeable height, reach and weight advantage, but also have the skills to use it.

They're also all on steroids, which is something his larger foes never had the opportunity to use.

For the record though, I'd actually give him a chance against Wilder, who's so inept and clumsy that I wouldn't be surprised to see him take a nap. But Dempsey also has the strong possibility of getting put to sleep himself, and in a bad way.
