Comments Thread For: J. Mayweather: Haters Fueled Floyd's Big Pay-Per-View Numbers

Jeff Mayweather, uncle of former five division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., believes the "haters" were the main reason for his nephew's successful run on pay-per-view for so many years. Mayweather was a main event participant in the top three boxing pay-per-view events of all-time.

This is a big myth. Are you telling me that his haters would put up $60 to watch him fight 8-1 underdogs in the hopes that he would lose? lol gtfo. His haters likely streamed most of his shows.

Reality was that Floyd had a lot of fans that bought his PPVs.

How did Berto prove it? Did they suddenly stop hating him?

It's a mix of the 2 yea his fans did but but you have people who will pay to hopefully watch him lose. Whether they admit it is the question.

Berto proved no one bought Floyd ppvs for Floyd, well there is a solid 300k of Floyd buyers but that's not even 20% of his top 3 ppvs

No shit. The only thing the Berto numbers proved is that it was a terrible fight.

It proved it was a terrible fight. Mismatches always do less numbers. That's all.

BTW if you're paying to see Mayweather lose, you're still paying to see Mayweather. Smart man.

There's no doubt that haters fueled his big PPV numbers.

Even Floyd has said it. He said something to effect of, "I love my haters...I love the people who root against me...because at the end of the day y'all are getting my fights and putting money in my pocket too".

I can't even tell you how many people that I knew or spoke to during Floyd's career who would literally buy every Floyd fight -- and then root against him.

You don't become the biggest PPV guy of all-time without being a polarizing figure, and Floyd was arguably the most polarizing guy in all of professional sports during his time. Of course he had a lot of people who were fans, and a lot of people who bought his fights to watch him put his skill on display -- but you'd be naive as f**k to think that the vast majority of the buyers were actual Floyd fans. Floyd was, like it or not, arguably the most hated professional athlete of his era. For every PPV buyer that was a fan of his there was probably one who bought just to hope that they'd see him finally lose.

Truth... Hahahaha. His haters swore that he would lose in every fight. People actually thought that Ortiz, Maidana, Cotton, Pacquiao, De La Hoya, etc. were going to KO Floyd. They couldn't even knock the guy down. Legendary fighter and tougher than people give him credit for.
