nobody gives a damn about Khurtsidze vs Saunders, but if Canelo gets that WBO strap then that makes the Golovkin clash that much sweeter..winner is undisputed. so this decision is in the best interest of boxing fans.

good job WBO. I'm sure Khurtsidze understands.
I give a damn about Khurtsidze - Saunders. I think it'd be a good fight, but more than that it's the principle, what's the point in having the orgs at all if they ain't gonna try to enforce their own rules? How will guys who don't bring the money ever gonna get a chance to shine if the orgs constantly bypass them. I know it's not new, I know it happens all the time, but that doesn't make it OK. With Canelo - Chavez in the pipeline Saunders vs Canelo ain't happening anytime soon, so why shouldn't Avtandil get his shot first?

In my reading the issue is more to do with the WBO taking sides in the promotional crap between Haymon and GBP. If Canelo wants Saunders, with or without a belt all he has to do is ask (and provide the right payday), he doesn't need to be mandatory. Anyway why would the WBO care if Canelo had to fight Khurtsidze rather than Saunders for the strap? Neither bring much money. They could sanction either bout if they chose, surely? No. I suspect GBPs worry is that Saunders might lose to Khurtsidze and they would then be forced into doing business with Haymon in a situation where Haymon holds the cards.

I actually disagree with the take most people seem to have on this.

Yes the WBO love Canelo, but they also love Warren, going back 20+ years and this decision was made in order to let BJS keep fighting bums because Alvarez will probably face Chavez next and then GGG so BJS gets another easy year.

Canelo doesn't need to be mandatory to anyone, he could get the BJS fight whenever he wants because of the money he brings to the table. Not like Canelo is going to enforce his mandatory, go to purse bid and accept BJS getting the majority of the split. If he wants the fight GBP will make a big offer same as they would've done with or without the WBO decision.

Khurtsidze on the other hand has no other way of getting Saunders into the ring. Mandatory was his only chance but he was too high risk for the belt holder.

Ummm. Interesting take - you're coming from the same place as me when it comes to mando not being required to make Saunders - Canelo, but I'm thinking it's more to do with GBP not wanting to possibly have to deal with Haymon, simply because it's GBP who made the request of the WBO. Doesn't mean Frank couldn't be in on it too, of course, as the official request clearly couldn't come from the title holders representative.

I'm going to laugh when Canelo fights JCC Jr and they just keep Canelo mando in hopes that he'll still fight him and BJS will just do whatever while Khurtzhide still sits and waits.
Lou in the meantime just gonna do nothing

But all Warren had to do is request someone else as the mandatory, then the WBO accepts as long as the proposed alternative meets a couple of vague requirements (acceptable record etc).

The WBO top 10 has a few weak options for Warren to pick from (a la Akarov).

Maybe Canelo-Saunders will happen, but GBP seems to have problems making offers that other boxers can accept these days. However, pretty sure Saunders would accept a flat fee, and even go to the US to fight if the offer is big enough.
