So the question is, why did Kovalev "take his foot off the gas?" Watching the fight live, I thought Ward's body work took some steam outta Sergey. Watching it again, I think it was a combination of things. Kovalev didn't wanna fight on the inside and would simply tie Ward up when he got close. In the second half of the fight, the ref wasn't as quick to break them and let Ward work a lil more in there. But I think the biggest thing was that after the second, Kovalev didn't have the same success landing as he had in the first two rounds, and got frustrated. He lost his fundamentals. He basically started chasing, instead of cornering. And walked himself into stiff jabs. He also went from setting up his offense to simple throwing and hoping he'd land. I don't think he gassed. He just lost the adjustment game. And it ultimately lost him the fight. And some of that is on Jackson.

Kovalev basically did the same thing to Ward that Floyd did to Maidana in their rematch. Everytime Ward got inside, he grabbed him however he could. If the ref doesn't allow it or deducts points, the entire "controversy" is moot. Became Sergey had no answers for Andre in close quarters.

Now people are saying that Ward initiated the hand locks by putting his head down and try to initiate inside fighting. So he forced Kovalev to put him in the headlock? Further why would you talk about letting off the gas and making adjustments for the next fight and if you felt like you dominated the first fight?

Which proves that Kovalev has no inside game, thus Ward is still the better, more complete fighter.

Newsflash: Look around at some other boxing sites. There's easily a case to be made that a majority of fans say Kovalev won. Try to keep up there friend.

missing a lot of punches causes fatigue and frustration

Kovalev should tighten that up in the rematch
