  • After the fight my initial reaction was that the KD was the difference in a very close fight. And when Buffer said 114-113 for all score cards I thought that it was surely going to be Kovalev. And I was rooting for Ward for the record. But I watched it again on Sunday morning -- and I can see how Ward would've gotten a 114-113 score card. What surprises me though is that all 3 cards went to Ward at that score.

Look, it was a really, really close fight. Coulda went either way, and whomever lost was going to feel like they had a case to win the fight. So f**k it just do it again and settle it...this is why we have rematches.

That's what people should be questioning. Not the scores themselves but the fact that all 3 judges, arrived at the only possible score that can favor Andre Ward.

Like if you were to select 3 scorecards out of a possible 100, what is the probability that all 3 scorecards would show a score of 114-113 for Ward?

The objective is reaching the fairest score. Scoring a round even should not be a issue unless there is a bias to one fighter in order to give them the swing rounds.

Mike D this is a good post. I really hadn't thought about this at all. It is statistically unlikely that all 3 judges would have the exact same score in such a close fight.

Yeah great point.... when I heard it was a UD I thought it would be Kovalev's victory because I highly doubted that all 3 judges would go against the more aggressive defending champion. I was actually expecting it to be a split decision, majority decision or draw.... I thought with this type of fight there would be a range of scores amongst the judges so a UD for the guy that the majority thought lost raises eyebrows.

              • I thought that we're supposed to score not just on number of punches landed, but how hard the landed punches were, and how much damage they caused?

Otherwise I guess fighters like Paulie Malignaggi and Mauricio Herrera would have more Ws.

                • Great fight and they were evenly matched. I'm already drooling for the rematch.

The only thing that bugs me about the offical scoring is the 10th round. I don't see how that round could of possibly been scored for Ward. Anyways.

                  1-10-9-Kovalev
                  2-10-8 Kovalev
                  3-10-9 Ward
                  4-10-9 Kovalev
                  5-10-9-Kovalev
                  6-10-9 Kovalev
                  7-10-9-Ward
                  8-10-9 Ward
                  9-10-9 Ward
                  10-10-9 Kovalev
                  11-10-9 Ward
                  12-10-9 Ward

                  114-113 Kovalev

                  • For example the Mauricio Herrera vs. Danny Garcia fight.

Mauricio landed more total punches, but Danny landed the harder punches.

Defensive fighters have zero room for error. Mayweather used to lose rounds because he got touched and it was rare to see him hit cleanly. This was the case against Maidana, Castillo 1, De La Hoya, Pacquiao, etc.

There's bias in judging from all angles, especially when you have a preconceived notion about the fighters' style going into the fight.
But Ward actually fought Kovalev in the center of the ring. He was rarely stuck against ropes and wasn't running like old man lederman alluded too.

The only reason folks are yelling about Wards supposed running style is because he's black and defensive minded. Keep in mind, when usyk and Loma do this, they are enjoyable p4p champs
