In my eyes Ward clearly had it. Ward landed all the body shots, did all the work inside, and had Kovalev fighting his fight at his pace by the fifth round. I'd put my money on Ward in the rematch to control Kovalev from start to finish.
I've not seen anyone mention the last fight that I saw as similar, Mayweather/Maidana. Mayweather definitely had a bit of a hard time wrangling him in their first match, but by their rematch he effectively shut Maidana downs. Expect the same here.

It is and it isn't. In theory you should always be able to find a difference.

But in practice it doesn't work. There should be a difference in how a clear round is scored and a toss-up. A side benefit of this, beyond being fairer, is that it encourages offence. Fighters should be rewarded for trying to go an win a round.

Where once back foot outboxing wasn't sufficiently recognised in the sport, now it was swung too far in the other direction. Defensive negativity is rewarded, and fighters with a rep for aggression seem to lose low action rounds by default. Regardless of who actually scored most.

I think in any fight the close rounds tend to go to the guy you favor.
Sure , i see your point , but the fight didn't end up with all the close rounds going to Kov , they went to Ward which is why the outcry from the Kov camp/fans , if it was 116-11 Kov you would hear the same from the Ward fans , as anything close , there are opinions (and if its not close there are still crazy ppl , see ppl who think Pac won vs Floyd , i wouldve loved Pac to win it , really did , but it he lost it clearly).
For me , if i try my best to be objective , Kovalev won , and other then giving my objective view of things nothing can be added , lets hope for a quick rematch and a clear winner.
Gratz to Ward for taking a HUGH task with Kovalev he did great.

Kovalev 1,2,4,6,10,12. Scored rnd 5 dead even

              115 - 113 Kovalev.

Damn close fight though, and one in which your own narrative can subtley skew how you see the close rounds. Did you see Ward staging a spirited comeback to impose his will on the second half of the fight or did you see him do just enough to barely stem the tide?

So Ali, Ray Leonard, RJJ, Pernell, etc and fighters who fought like them, off the back foot, weren't sufficiently recognized and shouldn't be in the future?

It's a one sided argument but it's understandable considering a lot of fans are frustrated.

Defensive fighters have zero room for error. Mayweather used to lose rounds because he got touched and it was rare to see him hit cleanly. This was the case against Maidana, Castillo 1, De La Hoya, Pacquiao, etc.

There's bias in judging from all angles, especially when you have a preconceived notion about the fighters' style going into the fight.

Ok. I thought Kov won as well. I honestly can't get too upset with any score between 115-112 Kov to 114-113 Ward.
