Outside of Kovalev-Ward ending up being a 7-5 barnstormer of a fight (warranting an instant rematch), fighting Adonis Stevenson is the biggest fight that either fighter can look forward to if folks are honest (Joe Smith Jr KO'ing Bernard Hopkins would give HBO another fight to consider, but you can't honestly point to anyone else that the boxing public is pondering as the next one up).
Kovalev/Ward-Stevenson unifies the division, lines up either guy against the most destructive puncher in the weight class, and it also gives the winner another bout that can be brought to Vegas and rightfully staged on PPV (maxing out another payday).

You'd be wrong in thinking so
A few examples showing the difference:
Garcia was RING champ after beating Khan, Lineal after beating Matthysse
Mayweather was RING champ after beating Guerrero, but (universally) lineal after beating Pacquiao.
Canelo was RING champ after beating Trout, but was never lineal at 154 (Mayweather became lineal after beating Canelo)
And as above, Stevenson is currently lineal, but the RING championship is currently vacant
With so many people confused as to the difference, it only highlights how irrelevant the lineal system is becomingComment

no, it's not.....
The Ring - unfortunately - often uses lineage when ranking
but they do not decide/determine lineage, you can only win that in the ring
the lineal champ, will still be the lineal champ, regardless as to whether the Ring recognize him or not..... and The Ring champ, is just an award, that means very little..... because they do not sanction/mandate
" lineal ", and " The Ring " are horribly over-rated.... because NEITHER are definitive
you simply cannot use any of the ABC organisations, or lineage, or The Ring, to definitively determine anything
they are simply guessing/opinionating
e.g.
The Ring do not rank the lineal LHW champ Stevenson #1..... but, The Ring DO rank Canelo #1 at middleweight, despite the fact that he has never faced a middleweight opponent, EVER!
they say dumb ****, for their own reasons, just like everyone else..... they could be better than other organisations, and often are..... but they most definitely NOT definitive, so they cannot be relied upon for anythingComment

No idea what the filming schedule would end up looking like, but it wouldn't be out of the question to see Andre Ward make a title defense around Easter (in Oakland or in NYC), head off to make the movie, and then have one "keep sharp" fight to then prep for the Stevenson unification.
Stevenson makes his mandatory defense in early 2017, likely lines up fight against someone like Jean Pascal/Marcus Browne (decent enough fight, that also comes with Canadian/TV interest; either guy could be brought busy in early 2017), before closing out the year with his own "keep sharp" fight.Comment
