The problem with this is you are either forgetting or ignoring the fact he discussed fights with Froch and Chavez jr. at 168.
When the choice was Froch or Chavez jr., it's clear that GGG and his team were willing not to choose unification or were willing to go up to fight either of these 2 and then go back to 160 to complete unification.
Of course he forgot! They also didn't have the 164 catch weight requirement for Froch or Chavez Jr. either! After seeing what Brook did, it all became clear! Ward would've beaten the **** out of GGG!

GGG fans act like he didn't fight Ward because of principle when he clearly was willing to abandon his goal of unification to go up for easier, more lucrative fights. That isn't a big deal because any and every pro would do same
His fans just keep trying to make this move admirable or respectable and pretend that unification is some goal that GGG has stayed faithful to.
In the end it doesn't really matter-Ward moved up and is scheduled tot ake on the guy GGG fans feel is the best LHW in the world. Meanwhile, GGG is still meandering around trying to find fights in a division where the top guys can make money without him.
Disappointing to hear but not unexpected really. Ward is simply too big for GGG and the fight would in all honesty be a miss-match. I would favour Ward even if the two were the same size given that Ward is a better boxer but with the size and strength advantage it wouldn't really be much of a contest.
Still we have the Kovalev fight to look forward to so not a huge loss imo
You're typing what GGG and company are thinking but scared to say out loud.
Ward never wants to give any concessions, I don't blame him though since he's never in the position to actually have to.
He was willing to make a fight with GGG at 168 & now says only at 175. Yet some still will use this as Gennady not willing to make the fight? GGG offered at a catch weight of 164 & everyone knows that if that fight is ever to happen it will now have to be at 168 or higher CW. 175 will never be realistic for GGG. Ward knows this & is simply trying to use his size as an advantage. I don't blame him, but it's still the same as critics made of GGG vs Brook & actually worse, more like Canelo vs Khan. Ward will have to give up something to make this fight, plain & simple...just as Golovkin would. Don't really see either side at fault here, but the scales definitely have always tipped towards Ward not being the one to give in a little.
This fight will always be talked about because it's a potential great match-up, something that may still happen a couple of years down the road. If Golovkin's star continues to climb & he eventually moves up to 168 the pressure & questions will only continue to be asked...until Ward gives in.
Like how you totally didn't mention GGG offering to fight Froch and Chavez jnr at 168 but then turning around and saying 164 or nothing when Ward called his bluff.

I swear the concept of a "timeline" seems to really mystify some people here.
At the time that GGG couldnt get unification fights and was entertaining the idea of fights with Froch or Chavez at 168, Ward was coming off a long layoff and needed several tuneups, according to his promoter Roc Nation
By the time Ward was "ready" to submit an offer for a GGG fight (a year down the line and at a weight Ward hadnt made in 3 years), GGG was in line for his unification fights at 160 and had no real interest in tying himself up with a ward deal.

That wasn't part of the Ward offer. I also didn't bring up Dawson.
Thought this was about making a fight? Sometimes both parties have to give in a little to make these super match-ups. When one side refuses any concession, then you have to point the finger & wonder why? Once again, I stated that Ward didn't need to give in since I don't think he could of made 164 safely & still keep as much size advantage. Nothing wrong with this move at all & then he saved face (actually gained some) by moving up & challenging Kov.
You need to notice that he didn't fight Kov in his 1st fight at LHW either. Why ask GGG to do so? Froch & Chavez aren't on the same level, so the dynamics around making these fights & their fan bases (what the opponent brings to the table) is always a variable in every negotiation.
Sorry, most this info is all well known & I find it hard to want to say the same thing that just gets regurgitated yet some refuse to accept the simple facts.
They couldn't go for unification at 160 and fight Ward at 168 in the same time frame, so had to make a choice. If Canelo and BJS had lived up to their words, GGG could have been the sports only undisputed, 4 belt world champion and a huge star by now. It was a no-brainer, really.
Could go for Froch to smw though but not for Ward? Only thing Ggg needs to do is pay BJS whatever he wants. He needs that fight now more then BjS at this point
