He did more than give Toney some good rounds he beat him twice.I dont necessarily have a problem with that. Griffin was a very good fighter with some glaring weaknesses. He still managed to give both Roy and Toney some good rounds. Especially Toney, who struggled with that type of fighter. He was 3-2 against Michalczeweski, Toney and Jones the 3 other best light heavy weights in that era and he was actually winning the Michalczeweski before the knockdown. I dont think he makes it in though.Comment

Archie Moore has wins over:guys with not more than 49 fights should be the title. more fights, more chances at fighting top guys. a lot of guys from the way back era (most notably moore) has real shaky resumes. moore fought as least 40 bums/compilers in a row (rofl @ johnny romero 114 wins !!!) and he lost to almost every notable guy he fought.
rocky gets props like a mfer for fighting his key opponents late in their careers but not may ?
Nino Valdez (x2)
Bobo Olson
Harold Johnson (x4)
Joey Maxim (x4)
Jimmy Bivins (x4)
Oakland Billy Smith (x3)
Charley Doc Williams (x3)
Bert Lytell
Jack Chase (x4)
Hollman Williams
Cocoa Kid
Lloyd Marshall (x2)
Nate Bolden
Shorty Horgue
And I'm by no means an expert. These are just the names i have heard of before as being top fighters. Someone more knowledgeable than me would probably pick out way more of the contenders of the era. Especially from the period before he fought Maxim for the title where i only really know the 'black murderers row' guys and a few others i just quickly boxrec'd to see who they beat.Comment

Yeah saw all of them. I mean, even if you think he won the Harding fight, that isn't gonna be the fight that gets him in the Hall. He holds wins over Toney and a DQ win over Roy that was erased by demolition. They did have a rematch five months later.
I don't see him getting in and he probably won't.Comment

Can't see how he definitely didn't win.Yeah saw all of them. I mean, even if you think he won the Harding fight, that isn't gonna be the fight that gets him in the Hall. He holds wins over Toney and a DQ win over Roy that was erased by demolition. They did have a rematch five months later.

As for erasing the win, I don't agree. Roy did what greats did and blasted him out in the rematch in a great performance but t doesn't erase with Griffin did in the first fight.
I agree he probably won't get in but he should IMO. He will be one of the many who aren't who should be. I bet Diego Corrales will also be on that list and maybe Castillo too.Comment

Well that's the difference between Roy and Montell, one was great. I feel like if Montell's run was longer than a year, he'd have a good case (maybe one more top win too). But he has Toney and a DQ win against Jones in a fight he was losing. Then got blasted in the rematch. It was all downhill from there. Can't see how he definitely didn't win.

Roy is my favorite fighter so I'd love for Griffin to get in and further add to his legacy but I don't think he deserves it and don't think he will.Comment

You won't see me comparing Roy Jones to Montel Griffin, although he's the only fighter in history for fight on even terms with a prime version.Well that's the difference between Roy and Montell, one was great. Two wins over James Toney.
Skill wise, he's got to be up there with the best of the era. If we are talking just pure skill.Comment

Yeah he was such a nice fighter. Great amateur background and a great trainer in Futch. The wins over Toney are great, I just don't think it's enough. I remember being legit worried Roy was gonna catch another L in the rematchYou won't see me comparing Roy Jones to Montel Griffin, although he's the only fighter in history for fight on even terms with a prime version.

good names of the day or good names regardless of the era ? some guys are legit ATGs and transcend all eras. some/MOST are not. having so many bums and compilers around made it possible for those guys to fight once a month and pad their records.Archie Moore has wins over:

i still say may shouldnt be compared to guys who have 80+ fights.Comment
