He's a fraction of the athlete Roy was. Roy was an intelligent fighter, but he didn't need to be half as smart as Ward is.

Hopkins has great boxing IQ and used every ounce of it to be competitive at his age, Roy Jones was ridiculous good at his best, but once his reflexes and speed/power were gone, he couldnt keep up anymore.

Mayweather also adjusted his style, after he started to get slower.
Exactly, You sir are correct. I would say Roy is above average, but Ward is higher. What made Roy so dominant was his tremendous athleticism.

It's amazing how some people believe "athleticism" is all it took for Roy Jones to do the things that he did.

Roy Jones ability to make his punches flow that fast after his opponents makes mistakes, is crazy, you can be fast as you want, but Roy is another type of boxer, his boxing iq is really underrated.

At this point I'm not sure if amazing is the word I'd use lol. It's like they haven't figured out that age affects everyone and he didn't just wake up one day lose his athleticism, go out and lose immediately.

If they both took risks like DLH, their boxing IQ wouldn't be as great. Bet anything on that.

The most misunderstood fighter of all time. His feints, timing, punch selection, punch placement, ability to set traps range control. It looked like Roy could slip counter with his eyes closed. Dude had a very high ring IQ that was complemented with Superman level athletic ability.

You can't be that great of a counter puncher and not have a high ring IQ.
Exactly, if Roy had just relied on athleticism he would have been figured out and lost well before he did. The reason he was so dominant is he had the ring IQ to complement his insane talent. Otherwise he would have been like the variety of other super fast boxers who got timed and beaten throughout their careers.

Like I said, just listen to him commentate. He knows the sport remarkably well. That knowledge showed in the ring throughout his career. That's why he could go an entire fight without using a jab, jump to heavyweight, and use the jab to perfection against Ruiz.

If we are talking perceived risk, what fight did De La Hoya take in his peak years that was considered as risky as the James Toney fight for Roy?
