U got to agree that when RJJ was given the choice he always deiced to face the weaker champions out their than live dangerous and face the Nunn's,Benn's,Collins & Eubanks off this worlds but he decided to face ppl like RICK Frazier who was Actually a COP from new york in a total Mismatch,
And RJJ never wanted to fight Dariusz michalchwesi (if thts how u spell it) who many thought was the true liner champion at tht time,
RJJ went on to fight the likes off Glenn Kelly,
And everyone saying "well rjj won the heavyweight championship" why by beating JOHN RUIZ? every1 knew the only real heavyweight champion out their at that time was LEWIS (i know even RJJ knew he would not beat LEWIS but come on!)Comment

Roy Jones is only behind fighters like Ali, Robinson, Armstrong, Duran, Hagler, Louis, and Leonard. He goes in the next tier around 10 to 20.Comment

As if there was another need for a toney fightOriginally posted by JuicyJuiceHe doesn't make my top 100.
We should of been treated to Jones/Benn, Jones/Eubank, Jones/Nunn, Jones/Toney II, etc, but he was content to defend against Antoine Byrd and Richard Frazier instead.
Your right, had we been treated to those fights, we would be talking about how roy jones was one of the top 3 fighters of all time.
In terms of talent, roy is probably top 10.
In terms of accomplishment, top 20.Comment

Duran is 3rd because....
1.) One of, if not thee greatest lightweight of all time.
2.) Beat one of the better welterweights of all time to become a two division champ....and has impressive wins over former champs, Palomino and Cuevas who reigned at 147 while he reigned at 135.
3.) Only Lightweight Champion in History to win Middleweight Gold (that I'm aware of)...and did so against a huge middleweight at the age of 37 because of his skill...also fought nip and tuck with one of the greatest Middleweight Kings ever, Marvin Hagler before losing a close decsion over 15 Rds.
4.) Was world champion in 4 divisions
5.) If you take Duran with all of his skill, his chin, his punching power at 135 and put him in Any weight division from heavyweight to flyweight, he beats 90% of all the fighters who have ever lived, IMHO.
My reasons for RJJ being at #4....
1.) He was the best Middleweight in the world, beating Bernard Hopkins, who would go on to become one of the Greatest Middleweight Kings of all time.
2.) Roy, in winning the 168 Lb crown, completely dominated the #1 Pound-4-Pound fighter at the time.
3.) As a light-heavyweight, Roy bested most of the best the division had to offer: Merqui Sosa (TKO in 2), Montell Griffin (by way of rematch, destroyed the usually durable Griffin in 1), Virgil Hill (never been stopped before Roy KO'd him with a body shot, breaking a rib in the process...underlyihg Roy's bringing punching power to 175 from 160), Reggie Johnson (completely dominated one of the slicker boxers of the time as though he were a novice), Eric Harding (gave Hading his first defeat by TKO in 10....and Harding is still a force in the divsion), Julio Gonzalez (still a force in the division), Clinton Woods (tko in 6...still a force), Antonio Tarver (though in the twilight of his career, Roy had to gut out a close decision over the NOW World Champion, showing his heart in the progress)
4.) becoming the second reigning Light Heavyweight Champion and only the second former Middleweight King to win a version of the World Heavyweight Championshop by outclassing John Ruiz, who had wins over formeer world champion Evander Holyfield, and contender Kirk Johnson and who went on after the loss to Jones to beat current WBC Heavyweight Champ Hasim Rahman, and contenders Fres Oquendo and Andrew Golota
5.) if you take Roy at his best and put him in any weight class from Heavyweight to Flyweight, with all of his speed, power, reflexes, and skill...he beats many of the best who have ever lived and those he doesnt beat would have had a hard time with him. Roy is quite possibly the most gifted athlete to ever put on gloves.
I understand your sentiments concering Fitz...I've flipped the two a few times and may again. Fitz was a marvel.Last edited by K-DOGG; 05-04-2006, 02:24 PM.Comment
