A lot of fans are confused and boxers are using this confusion to duck mandatories. Technically Cotto wasn't not Canelo where the full WBC Champion because they never reclaimed the Interim piece.

This situation isn't like the WBA that hands out titles like candy on Halloween. Rubio was champion in the interim because Martinez was out with an injury. Based on the definition of interim champion And the fact that WBC doesn't just hand out its Interim title like the WBA, Rubio was champion until Martinez returned and made the title while again.

GGG won the title from Rubio so he was half WBC MW Champion ( that's why the split would have been 55/45 instead of 80/20). The sport is become a joke because fighters want to show up twice a year for the biggest fights possible and not honor their obligations to the sport. Martinez really should have been forced to fight Rubio before facing Cotto.

I use to be a big Cotto fan, but I don't know who this guy is. He's a far cry from the warrior that faced Margarito.

In the mean time, they will throw a sacrificial lamb in the ring with Golovkin to keep his buzz afloat, risking serious injury to completely not qualified, unequipped boxers. And call them "mandatories." Now who's the spineless POS here, really?

This is about Cotto stating dumb **** , the guy is milking whats left of his carrer cant blame him , but the fans of boxing (if he has HIS fans paying for his fights , sure why not) should not be getting a Cotto vs Marquez PPV fight with a combined age of 80 and a series of lackluster performance in the ring .... its a money grab , having a name in the ring doesnt make it a good fight if the name is a dead horse now, mandatories ARE important because thats how you get new guys coming through , mainly if they are not from US/Mexico/UK/PR .
In the end Cotto cries about too many champions but he ducked the ONLY real champion in 160 the same as Canelo , we are very close to what he actually wants (1 champ in the division) but not because he helped us get there.

Cotto is right about a lot here.

That said, the two situations are different. Cotto was blackmailed into paying step aside money, and he wasn't even supposed to fight GGG yet during that time. Just because he is a big name in the sport doesn't mean you get to shuffle around mandatories.

Canelo on the other hand, really has no excuse. It's a coward move, and he had said numerous times previously he would fight him, and then has the audacity to say in live after his last fight, and then vacates. It's pathetic.

On the one hand, Cotto rightly criticizes the alphabet groups for creating multiple world champions at every weight to generate more fees

On the other, he criticizes the WBC for trying to force a unification that would reduce the number of world champions at MW

                      Cant have it both ways
