It comes down to who will be available. I could understand GGG taking on Saunders over Lara although I wouldn't be as interested. I just think Lara is an ideal opponent for Golovkin now. What's disturbing to me is their silence regarding it. Maybe we're all being fooled and the Canelo fight gets done. One can only wish.

So maybe he should move into a division first before challenging its champion if he wants the public to take his challenge seriously.
Nobody is writing letters to have GGG fight Lara (well, you and a few others on boxingscene are...) and nobody outside of Lara's team thinks he will be a serious challenge to GGG. You can tell because nobody sees a path to victory for Lara that does not involve him miraculously never getting hit by GGG and never getting cornered in the process.
Lara does not even register as a threat to GGG by the general public. If they remember him at all it will be as the guy who ran from Alvarez all night. Hardcore fans will remember his fight with Angulo, and then will substitute Angulo for GGG in that equation and do the math.Comment

I agree 100% that Lara is blowing smoke. GGG does however, have a much bigger fanbase and box office power than Lara. He regularly sells out fights in the both the east and west coast, has signed a endorsement deal with the Jordan brand and recently threw a first pitch at a Dodgers MLB game! He is now regularly mentioned and discussed on top American sports shows (eg ESPN first take and PDI) He's slowly but surely crossing over the mainstream. Lara is extremely unknown to the vast majority of boxing fans and sports fan in general. Due to his fighting style, he will always have a hard time attracting fans to come to his shows
However, up until now those attempts have been futile. He is still a relatively unknown among casual fans.
Therefore he is going to need a big name ppv star to really crossover into the mainstream: Like a Canelo. Cotto, Pacquiao or a Mayweather but not an Erislandy Lara because history has shown that he cannot carry an entire PPV event on name recognition alone with just doing over 97,000 buys in pay per view sales.
He needs an excellent foil with a huge fanbase in order to attract a much broader audience. Also, the American boxing business model is much different than other markets around the globe. For instance, most of American boxing revenue (at least 90%) of it, comes from guaranteed Premium network television money like HBO and Showtime, while the other 10% comes from the live gate.
Therefore, promoters can afford to give tickets away or slash them exponentially to give the illusion that their fighter is a box office draw when in reality they are not.Comment

AGAIN, One division north and he's there. What, is there some steel wall he has to blast through to get a MW title fight? Fighters do it all the time. Going back and forth between divisions is nothing new. And, if he's no threat (like Wade, Rubio, etc...) WHAT exactly are you afraid of? Were fans 'writing letters to have GGG fight' Wade, Monroe, Rubio, etc etc etc? Your argument is meaningless, that is unless you just admit you're afraid your idol gets bewildered by Lara. Which, for a few rounds at least, he would. I doubt Lara lasts 12, but he'd most likely last longer than Rubio, Wade, Ishida, Macklin, Geale, Simon. If you think it would be a Wade type fight, no challenge to your messiah, let's see it then. Geez, you GGG guys about P your pants scrambling for more and more lame excuses. Let the f ing fight happen, and we'll see how much of a wizard your wonder boy GGG is. SMDHComment

I understand everything you are saying. It's a know n fact, that GGG is a much bigger draw than Lara and has also been given a very substantial promotional push by HBO in order to attract a mainstream audience.

I agree that he needs a high profile client to push him into the mainstream. His team has done a remarkable job in boosting his profile. You're right- A fight with Lara does nothing for his effort to break the mainstream, a Canelo or possibly Jacobs/ Eubanks does. There is no Jr. middleweight/ Middleweight/ Super middleweight contender that is more popular in the boxing world, apart from Canelo than GGG (I'm primarily talking about the United States). He is a truly special fighter (all major boxing/ sports writers- Dan Raefal, Chris Mannix, Kevin Iole, Lance Pugmire have the highest praise for his skills/ style).
Let's hope he finds his foil soonComment

"We're not negotiating thru the media," says Ellerbe.
"Amen!" says the floydhype fanboys in unison.
Here is Lara doing exactly the same thing, yet they're okay with it.
Does this Lara guy have no management team or what? He'd rather just talk to impress the media?Comment

So why doesn't lara just beat any middleweight to prove hes good enough for a GGG fight? It should be simple right, since hes such a sensation at 154 and just wipes everyone out. Why not just take on a tuneup at 160, put on a dazzling display of boxing wizardry, and show the world hes ready?Comment

If that's the case, then why has no fighter looked good vs Lara?
Sounds like you wanna protect your hero. All I'm saying is let GGG fight any who would agree to fight him. And BTW it isn't a long list who want to get in the ring with him. That is, unless you're afraid your idol with get confused vs a slick awkward boxer.Comment
