He was counted out.
Bit confusing as he didn't seem to be particularly hurt or dazed I think he has just purposely left it too late to try save face. Regardless he failed to beat the 10 count for whatever reason.
He was counted out. Ref got to 10 just as Martin started getting up.
At best Martin just mistimed the count, at worst he just wanted to quit in a way that would save him a little face
Alrite fair enough thats what I thought happened, but that article made me question what I saw.
And yea its either a mistimed count or a way to quit without quitting (either purposely or subconsciously). Martin's the only one who knows for sure I guess.
Regardless of what Martin knows happened I can't believe he felt the ref "letting it go" or whatever he's suggesting changes anything at all except getting him a few more seconds or maybe a round further to his demise at best. For a guy who seemed massively confident up til the bell rung he didn't "walk like a gawd" in the ring & was nearly 0% effective in there.
Martin deserves respect for making a voluntary defense against Joshua in the UK.
But as for the count watch the second knock down and count it yourself, its almost 12 when the ref waves it off.
Martin spent too long on his butt..literally

I think he was over-confident right up until the bell rang for the first round and AJ started touching him with punches. He might have been ready physically but he wasn't ready mentally for the job he had in front of him.
Anthony Joshua is not a man to be taken lightly, but that was what Martin did.
Im devastated... the 'Prince' was not even hurt! That ref was clearly in Hearns pocket...I dont want to see any American fighting on British soil ever again...Joshua was roided up the eyeballs and had the ref and crowd on his side...Charles Martin had no chance. Once again the Brits buy another title.
I submit the first fall - Charles Martin knows the rules ; If a knee is down he must be given a full ten count also he is making eye contact with the ref letting him know he is fine - the first fall was legit but the second one landed on the shoulder you can even see Martin laughing it off....I dont have more to say....this is not how you beat a champion...shame on the Brits.

Why people mention this I'll never know, from the Dempsey vs Tunney fight til today. The refs count rules the day. F#ck how many seconds a guy was down for or what anyone elses count was. Its not really relevant to being KO'd as to the current boxing rules.
If boxing wants to make a 10 count a literal 10 second count fair enough change the rules. There is certainly the technology to make that a reality today & I think I'd prefer it, hell I'd prefer a 5 count. I think there are many bad things that happen from guys being injured & given a 10 count to recover that is overall negative to their health & safety, but currently the ref counts a simulated 10 second count. So lets not act like thats not how things work & most importantly it doesn't even matter in regards to this fight anyway cuz Martin missed your count & the refs count. This wasn't even a Douglas vs Tyson 8th(?) round situation.
