Name one figh on the level of Vanes/Lara that has made that much money on a PBC card. Name the fighters on PBC that made $1.5 mil. Vanes turned down the J-Rock fight for around $500K. Vanes is the same guy who announced the Lara fight last week then claimed somebody hacked his twitter then admitted this week his twitter wasn't hacked. If you believe Vanes is making $1.5mil you're as special as Vanes

I can't see that a competitive market in sports has ever worked out great for any particular sport, certainly not the sports as big or bigger than boxing. The cream rises to the top sure, but there needs to be some centralized power structure that helps that cream rising to the top in a timely manner.

I'd also argue there is too much competition in boxing. You got independent contractors (boxers) vying for interest among powerful promoters who have to make a profit via building their product (the boxer) into a draw while also moving him up the rankings carefully of one of 4 "world" rankings to one of 4 "world" belts without catching a L cuz a L in boxing will greatly reduce the boxer & promoters future earning power.

In boxings current competitive market you oddly enough get a less competitive sport while a less competitive market in boxing would give us a more competitive sport cuz as the UFC has shown they give no f#cks who loses while fighting under their banner.

There are bigger structural problems with boxings current model than anything Haymon is doing.

Boxing is one of the best example of why a totally open market doesn't work. Open markets are efficient but chaotic, some regulation is required to keep things moving in a certain direction.

I am generally a free market capitalist, but when you look at boxing you see the flaws in the system because everyone is out for number 1 but there is no structure so the sport gets pulled in a thousand different directions. In such a system monopolies actually do bring order to the chaos and is kind of a step forward (basically the order goes oil discovered, oil companies form, oil companies get unified under Rockefeller, Standard Oil moves the industry farther setting the standard, T. Roosevelt breaks up Standard Oil and sets the regulations that better benefit the whole system). Boxing actually went through the steps but it was the mob that did it and it somehow reverted back to step 2, it is actually a great economics discussion but such nerd talk is lost on most people.

Unless they actually pull off the monopoly and still have money to do something with it after spending this much money, I don't see how inflating the purses relative to the market value is sustainable.
