Vanes says hes making 1.5M for fight against Lara

WTF would anyone pay Vanes $1.5mill to fight Lara again? The first fight was so horrible to watch they dropped the idea of a rematch even though it ended prematurely and it was a title eliminator for Canelo. Awesome use of resources. Could've used that money to put together a fight people actually wanted to watch...Comment

They don't make it back. Overpaying paying guys has really hurt boxing. You're seeing outrageous demands for purses for regular fights because of haymon's tactics. Fights aren't getting made because guys have an inflated sense of worth, so instead we get broner vs theopane.Comment

I can't see that a competitive market in sports has ever worked out great for any particular sport, certainly not the sports as big or bigger than boxing. The cream rises to the top sure, but there needs to be some centralized power structure that helps that cream rising to the top in a timely manner.
I'd also argue there is too much competition in boxing. You got independent contractors (boxers) vying for interest among powerful promoters who have to make a profit via building their product (the boxer) into a draw while also moving him up the rankings carefully of one of 4 "world" rankings to one of 4 "world" belts without catching a L cuz a L in boxing will greatly reduce the boxer & promoters future earning power.
In boxings current competitive market you oddly enough get a less competitive sport while a less competitive market in boxing would give us a more competitive sport cuz as the UFC has shown they give no f#cks who loses while fighting under their banner.
There are bigger structural problems with boxings current model than anything Haymon is doing.Comment

You would think meaningless fights are in demand based on the fanboys here who are just happy to see their heroes get money to fight garbage, but the reality is, attendance is low and ratings are falling. Showtime's ratings have fallen off a cliff and HBO's aren't doing great lately either. Ward was just in a very good fight and his ratings were slightly above a million. He was getting close to 2 million before. Haymon events are also losing money. Most people don't care about boxing but things have gotten so bad even hardcore fans are turning away. Boxing will never die but this is about as bad as I can remember in a long time.Comment
