His opponents just weren't that good either lol but Wlad's size certainly helped him. Wlad's tactics of jab, jab, clinch, push, would not have worked with guys who were the same size as him.

I know he fought a couple guys similar to him in size but one was middle aged and the other was an average fighter at best.

Not denying Fury's skill here but any idiot with two functioning eyes can see Wlad is more skillful.

I'm not talking about now, plus, he didn't grow old over night. Wlad fought against Fury like he has against everyone in the past 8 or 9 years. It didn't work cos he couldn't use his range finding tactics on someone 3 inches taller. Wlad is still superior to just about every heavy on the planet and, unlike what you are insinuating here, he is not so far gone.

I think the version of Fury who beat Wlad would have beaten him at any stage in his career. Even a younger Wlad would not have able to cope with Tyson's reach, size, speed and unpredictability. Styles make fights.

Fury is still only 27 and, if he keeps training hard, will get better still.

I agree that Wlad has better skills. But is that all that determines who the better fighter is?

So Larry Holmes is better than Ali? Trevor Berbick?

We can talk about who were better in their prime - That's not what your asking though.

You're asking who is the better fighter - 'Is' implies right now. Since they just fought and Klitschko got schooled, Fury is the better man.

Who had the better career? Klitschko.

Who is the better fighter? Fury, right now.

I think Tyson Fury has developed into a very competent and skilled fighter. After a shaky start to his career - he looked like a KO waiting to happen - he rededicated himself to the sport and through very good matchmaking has developed a pretty good skill set. Fury is also a tough and gritty boxer. He's been knocked down a bunch of times, but managed to get up off the canvas and turn the fight around.

That said, I'm sold on Fury just yet. He fought a smart fight and pitched almost a shutout against the best HW of the last decade albeit not the most entertaining fight. I think the rematch will be telling. It will tell us if Fury is the superior fighter or it might tell us that Klitschko just had an 'off' night when they fought the first time.

No, not necessarily. 'Is' implies generally speaking. Just because Fury happened to win doesn't make him a better fighter. Because that's not what he proved. Vladimir proved himself over two decades since winning Olympic gold in 1996, when Fury was still a child. In other words, Vlad is a proven better fighter than Fury.

Now, if Fury beats Vlad again and goes on to clean out the HW division in the coming years, it makes sense to pick up this discussion again, maybe. Until then, well... not so much.

Of course it does. Obviously heart, chin, punch resistance, willingness to fight the best and historical context all come into it but when we are talking about who is simply better it's Wlad.

Do you honestly believe, prime for prime, Fury is a better fighter than Wlad?
