What was his original purse? If he was getting $10k give or take that'd be around a 30% bump. I think that'd be a fair market value offer if thats the case or more or less the case.
Granted if De La Rosa didn't want $3k more or even $30k more & just had problems with the overage fair enough, but its still bad business to not fight over a 3.6lb difference in weight in a nobody cares non-title fight in my book.Comment

No, he should not have accepted the money and gone ahead. Money should not make it alright to cheat someone.[B][FONT="Arial"]
They said it was a problem, and if you do some checking you'd see that it almost always happens that paying the opponent some money makes the fight go on as planned. This was just one of the rare exceptions. They NEVER said they thought they could cheat. And they're proving it by having the guy analyzed to see if his body can or can't make MW any more. IOW they're doing the exact right thing. I'm a fan but I'm not happy it was cancelled, and he will need to get it together so this never happens again, be it at MW or SMW. Yes, what Lemieux did was unprofessional, but at the same time De La Rosa should've just taken the money and went ahead with the fight. Now, he'll probably end up with less fights for refusing this fight. Plus no payday yesterday. And supposedly suspended 6 months. Not a smart move either.
They said themselves that they fully expected to buy the guy off and fight on regardless. When you miss weight by that much, either you didn't fully try or you expected to get away with it and need to cook up an excuse.Comment

Wow. a whole two fights at lightweight. Such longevity at that weight. Margarito also called out Floyd at welterweight, to his face. But I'll just taste this tea for now.Comment

Its for sure unprofessional of Lemieux (or anyone else) to not come in on weight. I wouldn't disagree with that. I'm just saying if I was in the boxing business I'd look at De La Rosa worse for not playing ball & fighting a guy who's 3.6lbs heavier than him (with some $ incentive obviously). The show must go on.
Idk all the details with money offered or not offered or how much it was or wasn't & maybe my opinion would change with that info being known, but from the story I read + an assumption De La Rosa was offered fair market value by Lemieux's people for an overage in a non-title fight I side with Lemieux in a lesser of two evils situation.
Yea, it's really surprising. Not sure whats up with DLR there ?
Is this the De La Rosa who fought in the first series of the contender ?
The one with Gomez/Mora/Manfredo/etc.
He was like 18yo, undefeated, and he got injured or something. Or did he lose, I can't remember exactly now. If it's the same guy I seem to remember he got injured but could be wrong there.
But yea, he should never have been put in this position. Bizarre that he didn't take a payout to fight, no idea why..... but hard to put the blame solely on him for the card falling over when the other guy was unprofessional.Comment

I take the opposite stance. It's good that De La Rosa didn't agree to go through with the fight...that way the resulting drama, media attention, and embarrassment that Golden Boy suffered will make it less likely that this happens again.
If they can make the problem go away just by throwing money at it then there is no incentive to require more professionalism from everybody involved.
Real good point. Lemieux should be fined.Comment

JMM had 50 fights weighing under 135lbs and 2 fights at 135 before he fought FM at 142 (who knows what Floyd weighed. I wonder if his had his IV)
I'd call him a career super bantam, but hey thats just my opinion.Comment

I'm not putting the blame solely on De La Rosa. I just feel like even with Lemieux being unprofessional by coming in overweight, De La Rosa is being more unprofessional by calling off the fight over a 2.6lb overage + a overall 3.6lb weight difference.
I could change my opinion with more facts about the amount De La Rosa was offered &/or was turned down. After looking into the numbers more it sounds like some he said, she said **** with De La Rosa's side saying they were offered $3k on top of a $70k purse & the Lemieux side is saying they offered a doubling of the purse ($140k). Who's being honest? Who f#cking knows. I do know the commission this fight was going to be fought under has a automatic 20% purse penalty for the offending fighter so 3k seems too low to me cuz Lemeiux obviously made more than 15k, but then again I'm not exactly sure how much of that goes to the fighter & how much goes to the commission so maybe not idk.Comment
