Comments Thread For: Rodriguez: Ward Has The Style To Beat Kovalev and Golovkin

Edwin Rodriguez did not spend too long in the ring last year, but he was content with two stoppage victories, both of which were crowd-pleasers. In particular, his shoot-out with Michael Seals last November in which he tasted the canvas for the first time, showed his determination to bounce back and stop a previously unbeaten opponent.

GGG I can believe but Kovalev im not so sure. Kovalev style I believe will be difficult for Ward. One thing I do enjoy so much about the way Kovalev fights is he doesn't have throw away punchs, he is extremely patient and although simple his attack is well planned.

Ward wouldn't have as much issue with GGG, just based off the fact Ward would have all the physical advantages... While Golovkin would maybe have more speed, power but not strength, size, or reach. A tough fight but a fight Ward could win easily. Kovalev on the other hand would be a war!

I think he loses to both at this point die to a lack of motivation. But both fights could go either way. The skills between these three are off the charts.

I think Edwin's speaking a lot of the truth. Ward's style sucks for everyone and is hard to go against.

I don't think he beats both though. Kovalev schooled Hopkins who uses similar style. Of course Hopkins was 98 years old, but the style was the same. Kov is very patient and can play that game.
Golovkin's a better technical fighter than the punchers that Ward has fought. I can see a lot of 50/50 rounds between them, with GGG being the aggressor but getting caught with Ward's potshots, yet still cornering Ward often enough and putting a beating on him a few times each round.

The refereeing is important. Can Ward beat Golovkin on the outside? because if he's not the A-side, he wouldn't be allowed to work on the inside.

Fight is probably a pipe dream at this point, being that they're 15lbs away from the other and Ward couldn't get lower than 172 in his last bout. Not that I think either were particularly keen to get into the ring with one another anyway.

Ward has a height, weight, and reach advantage over GGG. Not hard to get into the ring with someone else who you have all physical advantages over, and beat them.

Stepping in the ring with Kovalev is another story.

Well, here's the thing. I think Ward's smart enough to get away with most of the crap he pulls without getting penalized too harshly no matter where he is. If the fight is outside of Oakland and the referee is your average normal ref, Ward will fight very dirty and get a point deducted. Maybe 2. The question becomes how Golovkin handles it - if he gets flummoxed or starts complaining to the ref, he'll lose the composure and the fight. If he stays calm or better yet, returns the dirt back to Ward, I think he wins.
