In 2006, Bika was a nobody.

He said he didn't want Kelly because he'd done nothing to warrant a fight and he didn't excite him.

He also said the same about Tarver and Dawson.

Again, look at some of the guys he fought?

Look at his 16 voluntary defences of his WBO belt.

Also, what he said about Kelly was bizarre. Because in the same interview, he admitted that he'd tried to fight Kelly in 2006 directly after he'd beaten Lacy.

    So:

What was he doing trying to fight an unknown NABF, MW champ in 2006?

If Kelly had done nothing to warrant a fight in 2008, what had he done 2 years earlier?

These threads are fun to debate. But what I've typed above tells me that he'd never have fought Andre.
Absolutely correct. Hell, he couldn't even get himself to fight Glen Johnson! He pulled out there separate times. Some may wonder, why be afraid of Glen Johnson? Well at the time, he won fighter of the year, beating Tarver and knocking out Roy Jones, the man Calzaghe thought was the greatest ever. He didn't want the fight.

Calzaghe lacked confidence in himself, big time. He admits that later in his retirement. He nearly passed out before the Jeff Lacy fight, having a severe panic attack.

He was a talented fighter but he was scared to test himself, and only really did towards the very end with Kessler and Hopkins later. The Hopkins fight is pretty much all one needs to know about to determine who would win between him and Ward. Hopkins had him looking like an amateur at times but Hopkins low work rate was the reason the judges scored it for Calzaghe, which was the case of Hopkins as he got older, especially 40 and above. Andre Ward is a similar fighter to the older Hopkins except that he's obviously youthful and doesn't need to pace a 43 year old body. Ward absolutely wins this fight.

This is the hardest fight to call for Calzaghe. I think he would have beaten guys like Golovkin and Froch easily and gotten destroyed by Kovalev. Ward is a guy I could see beating Calzaghe by constantly hitting and holding, so Joe couldn't get his combinations off.

I'd lean towards Ward beating him. That style is one I'm not sure Calzaghe would have success against. Ward is actually better than Hopkins at that rough house inside fighting.

        aldo5408,

        You guys got any links

        1999:
"I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money."
        http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Boxing...he.-a060444934

        2003:
"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown ***els I wouldn't want to risk it."
When Joe Calzaghe insists he is a better boxer than Lennox Lewis, the temptation is to brand him as an arrogant upstart. Lewis, after all, recently gloried in the ultimate accolade of "undisputed heavyweight champion of the world".

        2007:
"I have no interest anymore in Roy Jones and no interest in Antonio Tarver. Jones is washed up and Tarver was never that good anyway, he just caught Jones when he was shot and Johnson did the same."
IT WAS past three o'clock in the morning when Joe Calzaghe experienced the sweetest validation of his professional life. Victory over Jeff Lacy, a 28-year-old American compared to a young Mike Tyson because of his power and "take-no-prisoners attitude", left no one in doubt about the world super middleweight champion's talent. For years, Calzaghe's virtuosity remained a legend of the Welsh valleys. His defeat in 1997 of Chris Eubank brought him to prominence, winning for him the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) super middleweight title. But despite a record number of defences of the belt, his career lacked a defining contest. A long line of challengers and ex-titleholders were disposed of but the biggest names in American boxing avoided the ultimate showdown he craved. Hand injuries further obscured the true level of his aptitude for an art he began to learn from his father, Enzo, at the age of eight when - inspired by Sugar Ray Leonard - a rolled-up carpet in the family home in Newbridge became a makeshift heavy bag. This is the story of Calzaghe's extraordinary life, from his humble beginnings in his hometown of Newbridge, to his ascent to personal greatness, becoming the first super middleweight boxer to win the prized belt awarded by The Ring, the bible of boxing, in the division's near 20-year history. One of Britain's foremost sporting champions, a warrior and working-class hero, this is the story of the triumphs and trials that made Calzaghe a legend.

        2008:

"I knew for definite that by the time I got back, I'd be reading many observers saying that Jones is finished. I totally disagree. Roy gave me a really tough fight, still has exceptionally fast hands and would have been a match for many, many great fighters. But he met the best of Joe Calzaghe."
IT'S a pretty strange feeling, writing this column knowing that I may very well never step into the ring again as a professional boxer.

            Thanks.

What do you think of the links?

You can see why he received criticism throughout his career.

That's pretty damning. But just because he didn't believe in himself doesn't mean I don't. The Calzaghe that beat Kessler is better than any Ward I've ever seen against a better fighter Ward has ever fought(Kessler while still great was past his best when Ward fought him).
