You do realize that the differences here is Canelo is trying to drain a guy in his own division, when he owns a title and the lineal title. It would be one thing if Canelo could make 154, but everyone knows he can't do it. He failed in his last attempt and has sat at 1 pound above.
And he has the gull calling it his weight class. Canelo isn't that specially.
By the time they fight, GGG will own 3/4 of the MW titles, and will be one step away from unification. Also, he'll be the mandatory. If Canelo doesn't fight, he will lose tons of respect from hardcore fans, something he has done over the last few years anyways.
Many people liked Canelo before this whole I'm too big for JRMW, but too scared for 160 BS.
The guy is rehydrating up to 180 now, for Christ sakes.
From a top down picture, ok.
Look at some of the others from the side and you can see Chevez looks like a damn HW, while GGG looks his normal size.
Both Chavez and Canelo have spent their career draining way more weight that usual so they can fight in a lower weight class. Ward too.
In all fairness, so does Lara, Charlo, and Andrade. Those two and GGG all are legit MW sized fighters.
Canelo comes in heavier than all of them.
Wait a minute, have you ever heard of Hagler?
Come the **** on.
And it's not like Canelo moved up when he stop making weight for 154. He tried to make his own division. The I'm scared of GGG at 160 division.
There are plenty of differences between a MW and SMW meeting in the middle of their respective weight classes.
What Canelo is trying to do is the equivalent of Andrade attempting to drain Charlo.
And even if 155 was an actually division, splitting the difference wouldn't be 155.
GGG didn't do as Ward did Dawson, drag him all the way down.
If Canelo was willing to meet at 157.5, then we'd have similarities.
Although the fact Canelo is a MW, and GGG is a MW changes the equation entirely.
