A lot of blame belongs to the media. I read something interesting the other day:

Here are two blurbs about a 1.3 million TV viewership from the same writer and website (I’ll spare the name, but it’s a highly-trafficked boxing site), the first regarding Golovkin’s last fight and the second regarding an Andre Ward bout…Mind you, BOTH have virtually the same viewership numbers:

“Gennady Golovkin delivered a strong TV rating this past weekend, continuing what has been a good year for HBO’s boxing brand…Gennady Golovkin’s win over Willie Monroe Jr on Saturday night kept HBO’s 2015 in boxing going strong in the Nielsens, with 1.338 million viewers…”

          but, regarding Ward?

“1.3 million watched the fight on HBO on Saturday, which is, to best of my knowledge, right about average for recent WCB fights — nothing special, but also avoids being one of those true turd in the punch bowl results…It’s definitely not some big hit…the TV number is … well, it’s adequate, let’s put it that way. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some internal disappointment at HBO, no matter what they might say. “

Same writer, same numbers, way different twists.

At some point GGG will take on a challenge (we hope). But for now, we'll just have to sift through the bull****.
          Fk.

          Good post !

            This ^^

            I will go further.....

The insinuation that a Chavez payday would set Golovkin up for life, and that a Ward payday would barely make enough to pay for the parking expenses, is more than a little disingenuous.

Beating Ward would establish Golovkin as the best fighter on the planet. K2 and HBO would run with that like Forrest Gump on steroids..... it would also establish Golovkin as a PPV star much quicker than beating Chavez.

Ward would make more money for Golovkin that Chavez would.

Oh, apologies..... I mean, beating Ward would make more money for Golovkin than Chavez would.

beating Ward is Team Golovkins problem

Giving that context, I'd say the reporter was spot on - Ward/Dawson was a disappointment, while Golovkin/Monroe did surprisingly well. Double standard my ass...
A fair call maybe, but it dismisses what a win over Ward would do for Golovkin.

Those numbers would have little effect on both Golovkins status or on his bank account IF K2 and HBO were able to market GGG as genuinely elite and the best P4P fighter on the planet.

Potential PPV numbers are likely more important when it comes to marketing/finance.

Writing off Ward as a financial downside is only true if you cant beat him.

You can try to play up "context" as much as you want but either 1.3 million is a good number or its not, for both of them.
Actually I thought he made a fair point about the magnitude of the fight.

I just don't think those figures tell the full story, or even half of it.

Statistics are like a bikini..... they give you a rough idea whats going on but they hide all the good stuff.

PPV numbers are what matters. PPV is about about popularity sure, but you increase popularity with marketing/exposure/success..... and Ward offers legitimacy, opportunity, worldwide exposure, success, as well as money.

Beating Ward would be a huge financial windfall for K2 and HBO.

No I agree with the idea that a win over Ward moves Golovkin over considerably more so than maybe anyone else. But it's obviously a high risk with Ward's size advantage and hit/clinch/turn style. Golovkin lost the gold medal to a bigger guy similar to Ward - just mauled Golovkin to a points victory with a hit and hold style. Can't blame them for taking out the easier fights within his own division first, same reason Ward said he wouldn't fight Kovalev right off the bat.

At the same time Ward has damaged his marketing value - which gives team GGG additional reason to wait. If Ward can reestablish himself to level where he was at vs Dawson, it would help make the event much bigger and more meaningful.

                      Great post !

I even agree with the bold

But I am not convinced that Team GGG want anything to do with Andre Ward.

The revolving barrel of ever-changing excuses tells the whole story to me.
