A lot of blame belongs to the media. I read something interesting the other day:

Here are two blurbs about a 1.3 million TV viewership from the same writer and website (I’ll spare the name, but it’s a highly-trafficked boxing site), the first regarding Golovkin’s last fight and the second regarding an Andre Ward bout…Mind you, BOTH have virtually the same viewership numbers:

“Gennady Golovkin delivered a strong TV rating this past weekend, continuing what has been a good year for HBO’s boxing brand…Gennady Golovkin’s win over Willie Monroe Jr on Saturday night kept HBO’s 2015 in boxing going strong in the Nielsens, with 1.338 million viewers…”

    but, regarding Ward?

“1.3 million watched the fight on HBO on Saturday, which is, to best of my knowledge, right about average for recent WCB fights — nothing special, but also avoids being one of those true turd in the punch bowl results…It’s definitely not some big hit…the TV number is … well, it’s adequate, let’s put it that way. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some internal disappointment at HBO, no matter what they might say. “

Same writer, same numbers, way different twists.

At some point GGG will take on a challenge (we hope). But for now, we'll just have to sift through the bull****.
You guys just don't understand context. Ward was a US gold medalist, fought many of his developmental fights on ESPN, won the heavily covered S6 tournament, then was in the biggest fight of his career vs the LHW champ Dawson.

Then you have Golovkin from Kazakhstan/Germany. Fighting in the US for less than 3 years, no tv before that. And getting better tv & attendance for a criticized stay busy fight vs unknown Willie Monroe than Ward vs Dawson.

The fact that you guys expect equal comparison for those two fights shows you really don't understand.

Ward was never a star, gold medalist or not. So that's irrelevant.

Nice cop-out response, I guess should expect that from someone like you. Now you're flat out down playing Ward in order to lessen Golovkin, nicely done.

Ward-Rodriguez got 1.2 mil viewers on HBO. The channel the fights are shown on affects the amount of viewers, something Little G fans don't understand. Ward isn't as small a draw as Little G fans want him to be.

You haters need to stop hating on GGG, name another fighter in history who has beat up more Home Depot day laborers. I'll wait...

Uh-oh, looks like I got the Ward fans all confused again. So which is it? Is Ward an established name in boxing or not?

Ward/Rodriguez got a little over the average for HBO that night, but he only drew 4,000 fans to the arena. That's a good gauge that not too many people cared.

I laid it out pretty clear, you're just not capable of understanding. Ward's been an established top-level fighter for far longer than Golovkin, which means expectations for him should be higher. Add into that Ward/Dawson was a hyped up mega-fight with lots of build-up and in a prime time date of early September (taking Floyd's place while he served time). He was handed a golden opportunity to shine and people didn't care. HBO has tried hard to make Ward into a star, he just doesn't shine as much as they wish.

Yeah you laid it out and it's trash. Ward-Dawson was a mega fight? Yeah, it was all over ESPN . I'm beginning to think you don't even live in the U.S. posting nonsense like that.

Point still stands, in spite of your desperate attempts to downplay facts. Which is why you brought up the Olympics, as if winning a medal in a fringe sport somehow makes you a star. Your bull**** ain't flying here.

You're hopeless. You come on here b*tching some reporter gives a positive story on the Golovkin/Monroe turn-out and then a negative story on the Ward/Dawson turn-out. You b*tch and moan it's biased commentary because that serves your little pitty agenda.

You ignore the facts: Ward was a long established US fighter starting with his amateur career, early pro, then going off the heavily covered S6 into the Dawson fight which was hyped up by HBO and giving a majorly coveted date. In converse, Golovkin had less than 3 years of exposure in the US market and was taking a stay busy fight.

You want to say Ward/Dawson should be criticized the same as Golovkin/Monroe and ignore the levels.

So you wrote all this nonsense just to say the bolded. Perfect. Now tell me where I said that. Do it. Jumping in this thread on some Captain-Save-A-Hoe ****.
