Because Froch and Chavez Jr had many fans back then. They were fighting for 6 zero purses and GGG was still fighting for $300k.
You don't ask for catchweights when you the B side, chasing fights with A side "names" like Froch and Chavez.Last edited by kafkod; 10-08-2015, 01:59 PM.Comment

GGG has stated he will fight Froch at 168 in England because Froch brings huge sellout crowds (sold a 60k stadium within an hour). Froch was clearly A side to GGG, and getting a fight with Froch would have been great for GGG, even if he has jump a whole weight class. It's same reason he offered to fight Mayweather.
GGG fighting Chavez at any weight is a misunderstanding. It stems from a 2012 proclamation by Loeffler that GGG will fight anyone 154-168. However in a May 2015 interview, GGG has stated that he has no interest in fighting Chavez Jr because he brings nothing to his table... basically putting him in same boat as Ward (good fighter, does nothing for my career.)

As for catchweights, why should GGG have to jump 8 pounds into someone else's weight class when that someone has NOTHING that he wants? The question should not be why can't GGG go up 8, it should be why can't Ward trim 4.
164 is not a "catchweight" the same way Cotto uses them. 164 is the middle ground between fighters of 2 weight classes.Comment

i dont think u understand how boxing works....ggg was going to get ****d in those negotiations...he wasnt making any more than 500k vs those guys...look at what other opponents did vs them..
tom has brainwashed u to say this now bc u wont look at it in retrospect. u'll only look at it to benefit your argument...ggg is not a star and could get money off of those guys, but chavez jr proved that he wouldnt fight him unless got all the money, bc "then" he was not a star...so this excuse u all have been taught to say is bull crap..."only for big fights" is wat u all say...nothinga bout him only getting 500k while they take the rest is a big fight for him...
he felt he could win vs a fading froch...and overrated chavez lets honest...
he doest not feel he can beat ward..he'd get more in a ward fight than he would have in those fightsComment

sergio martinez well know and p4p fighter only got 1.4 vs chavez...u think a guy that wasnt known as well would get more? and i'm sure ggg would get more than 1.4 for ward nowComment
