I would choose a third option in the poll: nationality CAN have a bearing in whom I support...but not often.
When I was a little kid, the Olympics were a big deal, having an almost religious solemnity and significance. The fact that Sugar Ray Leonard had been an Olympic hero was a big deal, and it helped put him above other great fighters in most Americans' minds, I think.
Those days are gone, and more and more we live in one world. This is a good thing, if it means thatthere will be more and more understanding and less and less wars and hate.
On the other hand, today I see more race based identification with fighters. More so than nation based.
It's nothing new. But it isn't going away or diminishing.
