My point was that Cotto no longer comes straight in and backs straight out as he did with past opponents (see Zab Judah) that landed major uppercuts. Even with the knee problems, Martinez was still faster, moved better, and was bigger then Canelo, Cotto had no problem positioning himself against Martinez. I don't think Cotto will struggle for position against Canelo, Canelo is very flat footed and doesn't turn very much. We already know that Cotto can adjust, and fight through adversity, we haven't seen Canelo adjust. And adversity wise, he seemingly quit against Mayweather, he chased and followed Lara all night (I scored fight for Canelo), and he avoided being knocked out by a fighter two divisions lower. My concern for Canelo in this fight is that he fails to adjust. Mayweather has said of Cotto, their fight was like a chess match. If Mayweather had to make multiple adjustments to defeat Cotto, I think Canelo will have to do the same.
Margaritto walked down Cotto to a late corner stoppage, but Margaritto walked through 8 rounds of hell fire, being out classed and out boxed to do it (a feat he could not replicate). Manny overwhelmed an under prepared Cotto with speed and movement, but took a lot of risks, and big shots to do it, requiring surgery in his ear after. Trout defeated Cotto (I had Cotto loosing a closer decision) but Trout didn't want to be anywhere near Cotto, he kept Cotto at the end of his punches damn near the entire fight. Canelo doesn't share any of these traits, I don't think Canelo will knock Cotto out, and Canelo is not the better boxer, so what he must do is come forward and get off first, not just sit back and wait for counter punch opportunities. Canelo has to use his size to move Cotto backward, he will have to cut off the ring and try to force Cotto to fight off the ropes like Margaritto did toward the end of the first fight. If and when Cotto adjusts, Canelo will have to do the same, plan A will not work unless it's a one shot knock out. If Canelo stays true to form and just stands or plods around looking for combo and or counter opportunities, Cotto is going to eat him up.
