Why are fighters now fighting at a high level later in their careers?

Way less fights. Until recently fighting 60-70+ fights was the minimum. SRL was an exception. He was hurt (detached retina) / retired for basically 5 years. And those years were his prime years from about age 25 to 30.
Very few notable names before the present had less than 50 fights. Dempsey and Marciano were two. Dempsey cause he made tons of money just showing up to crowds and Marciano because he started boxing late and left early due to a bad back. Marciano only fought for about 7-8 yrs.Comment

Less fights, better ways to work out, better nutrition, and better medical care. There's more but those are off the top of my head.Tyson at 38-knocked out by Danny Williams
Leonard-at 35-Beat up by Terry Norris..at 40 stopped by Camacho
Chavez sr at 38 beat up and stopped by Kosta Tzu
Ali at 38-beat up and stopped by Holmes
Wlad is 39 still on top
Mayweather just went out on top at 38
Jmm was world class at 40Comment

lol @ people saying PEDs. Most steroids age you prematurely. I think the only one that doesn't is Primobolan which has anti-aging properties but it's not that anabolic at all though perfect for an endurance athlete as it has brilliant muscle sparring properties to it (imagine not losing ANY muscle whilst on a big calorie deficit to make weight).
Low doses of HGH is also anti-aging and helps burn fat/maintain LBM.
The fact is humans are just healthier nowadays. We eat better, we have better health care and we're far more health conscious. We're not playing with toys made out of LED anymore like in the 60s for a start.Comment

-Far more effective strength&conditioning/nutrition programsTyson at 38-knocked out by Danny Williams
Leonard-at 35-Beat up by Terry Norris..at 40 stopped by Camacho

-Fighters taking far better care of their bodies as professional fighters (there may be others, but the only top level fighter that I understand to be an open boozer is Tyson Fury, while Tyson/Leonard/Chavez Sr/Ali all abused their bodies while in the sport)
The modern fighter has figure out how to "put the fire out at both ends of the candle". Keeping the body clean extends your life in the sport, and not taking any real beatings takes less away from you as you continue in the sport.Comment

Well there's a few factors, first the fighters you mentioned (Tyson, Leonard Chavez) were not renowned as clean living athletes! And Ali took a ridiculous amount of punishment during sparring!Tyson at 38-knocked out by Danny Williams

Secondly Athletes of today have better nutrition and take care of themselves better out of camp!
Thirdly I'm sure PEDs have a big factor in boxers recovery periods between fights!
But you also have to take into account, boxers these days do not fight as often as fighters from the past!Comment
