Leon spinks was an olympic gold medalist, and ali was way past his prime by then. Canelo was green, people knew that going into the fight. I love canelo but after i saw his performance against trout, i knew floyd would outbox him.

but Mayweathers historical standing will increase with time.

He will be rated higher than he is now.
Thats the plan, but it wont be. His fights aren't entertaining enough or capture the imagination. He never took the risks. When fighting smaller guys like Pac, he clinched and ran and fought scared. He didn't go for the ko like he said he would. Sometimes to get ko's you have to chase it and go for it. Not hope one of your counters will catch them like JMM did to pac.
Youd have to want to watch the replays of his fights for his standing to go anywhere. Its all about keeping the zero, not the legacy.

Don't take people saying Floyd was scared to think people thought Canelo was awesome or anything like that. It was just the natural fight out there for Floyd at that particular time and if Floyd didn't take it, people could only think it was because he was scared. And he was. He asked for a CW didn't he, when no other Canelo opponent ever did if im correct. Just like I doubt anyone who ever fougth Maidana ever cared about what gloves he wore.
Only Floyd worries about these things doesn't he? Its all about the zero, not the legacy.

Canelo just wasn't that good back then when he fought Floyd. He sure is better now though.

Canelo turned pro at like what, 17,18? That 42-0 30KO record is mostly like his amateur record. Say what you want I never thought Floyd was scared to fight Canelo, plus why did he make that fight a catchweight fight when he always said he wants fighters at their absolute best. 151 wasn't Canelos best. Maybe Floyd haters said he is too scared to fight him but I always thought that fight was too soon for Canelo and i'll always feel that way, he just has major balls for taking it at that stage in his career. So you are saying Floyd fought Canelo at Canelos absolute peak? yea sure he was.

          • At Welterweight class alone:

Hearns would have dominated Floyd at a Welterweight fight.

Leonard vs Mayweather JR would have had Leonard winning as well, albeit at a closer margin.

Duran vs Mayweather, I could see Mayweather winning, but you can't count out Roberto Duran.

...and of course, you can't put Mayweather JR over Sugar Ray Robinson.

So no, I don't think Mayweather JR is the ATG, or even a top 5. Top 15, I can go for.

and also: Ali's win over Foreman trumps any win Mayweather JR has ever achieved. In fact, very few boxing fights will ever match Ali's victory over Foreman.

excuses.. ali lost to a guy that was 6-0, dont spin that any other way. . 6-0 is "green".. 40-0 is not.

why is he better now? since mayweather he's only looked good against C level flat footed cavemen like kirkland and angulo.. lara proved he still can't handle pure boxers, he shouldve lost that fight.

                • Causes a stir?? Who really cares about a list?
If it was anyone other than Floyd, no one would care.

                  These lists are ****** IMO.
Comparing fighters from the modern era to the old days is near impossible given how much the sport has changed. There are way too many factors.

                  • He didn't put either Sugar Ray in his top 5. I think it's obvious he didn't put anybody up there that he's constantly had to hear was better than him.

                    Ray Robinson is #1

and Leonard just goes in there anywhere above Floyd IMHO.

So you are banking on Canelo having a atg career to move Floyd up. In Floyds fights with Canelo, Floyd took it to him and won easily. But any honest objective person knows Floyd took advantage of Canelo saying he'd fight at 151. Plus in all honesty Canelo still was green no matter how you look at it. He just has major balls for wanting that fight.

But even if Canelo has this amazing career where people call him an atg that won't push Floyd up the ladder. They will just honestly look at his fight with Floyd as being fought at a very very very early stage in his career and was still green and had lots to still learn.

Plus when did Floyd outbox sweet pea? What in sparring. Like that has any bearing on his ranking. Guess what victor Ortiz f'ed up Oscar de la Hoya in sparring too, does that have any bearing on oscars accomplishments.
When has it not happened ?

And no, picking specifics is not what I suggested.

Also, insiders have access to much more information than fans..... and they are inclined to research, from authorative sources, not fan blogs.

Yes, most historians/insiders know the Mayweather/pea connection.

You cant seriously think that fans know better ?

                      Fans say the dumbest shht.
