I do listen to the experts and based on what they say ray and ali would have to be up there as some of the greats.. but when i make my top 5 list it will be fighters i grew up watching and actually felt the energy of their era.
You don't have to experience what Ali achieved to acknowledge it.

Ali has historical wins against top opposition.

    Its in the books.

He was only the greatest at saying he was the greatest-everything else is media hype and over-exaggerated B.S.
But his good wins, were MASSIVE !

      He climbed mountains.

Everybody has close/disputed wins, some styles offset yours and are more difficult for you than for other (sometimes less capable) fighters.

Some guys can hang in there and run you close because of good homework/preparation, and having particular aspects about their style that dont mesh well with your style.

        Exactly !

And that is exactly what Mayweather is doing with his TBE.

        Good post !

I don't think anyone would have Floyd no1 though. That's all Floyd did wrong here. He probably don't know his boxing history is the only explanation.
          He knows it !

Prime Joe Louis had devastating speed and good pop. So many warriors that put Floydie in the top 20, only because he has good defense. So much ducking and waiting til a fighter is shot. Whining for softer gloves, coming in overweight w/JMM, having Joe Cortez help him vs Hatton, the list goes on. Plus a pathetic role model for kids, and a misogynist woman beater. And a million excuses and instructions on how we're supposed to view what he does, and worship him... Example A: Berto fight.

No Floydie, you aren't number 1, but you're sure full of #2... 24/7/365.
um, you do know SRR was a notorious wife beater right.. he caused his wife edna multiple miscarriages due to beating her a.ss.. he also abused his children. .

A very large number of boxing insiders and serious fans would not put Ali at #1. Many would put him #2 and several would put him lower but almost all on the inside of the top 10. He may be referred to as The Greatest, a name he gave himself, but he is rated based on the overall quality of his resume (not to mention that he was an athletic monster) a bit lower than that in the mind of most. The vast majority of the people that refer to him at the best fighter of all time are casual fans or people who haven't watched boxing all together that have heard about Ali, which is a lot of people since Muhammad Ali is arguably one of the most well known boxers to have lived as well.

Anyone can call himself the greatest, the only reason we cared when Ali did was that he followed it up by stepping up to several great heavyweights in their prime and beat them.

Oh and floyd really lost to castillo and maidana in the first fights. Im just being honest
well, some ppl still debate the 2nd and 3rd Norton fights, and also vs doug jones, shavers, and jimmy young. . you can debate all of these bouts, but he's still the greatest right.. ali is allowed to win close fights, but floyd in a close fight? that's blasphemy, if the fight is too close, he automatically loses..crazy expectations don't you think.

But nobody is going to consider mayweather the best ever after he is retired.

I hate when people try and compare Floyd to Ali. There is absolutely no comparison except both being boxing. After that they are totally different. Ali was and will always be loved for what he accomplished in the ring AND THE RISKS HE TOOK AGAINST PROLLY THE ERA OF HEAVYWEIGHT COMPETITION OF ALL TIME.

Add to that what he did and stood for outside the ring. Put both of those things together and you have a guy that will be remember long long after he is gone.

You can't say that for Mayweather. Did he compete in an era where the competition is considered one of the best ever. Absolutely not. With the multiple champions in each division and with some organizations having two champs per division, you can say the champion fighter status is watered down. And that's not his fault, he's in the era he's in. But it's far far from one of the best.

Does Mayweather stand for anything outside the ring that people can admire and say wow that takes heart and guts to do what he's doing, absolutely not. He is all about money and flaunts it in a time where the minorty is getting the short end of the stick everywhere.

Will he be remember, maybe. But his memory won't even come close to what Ali's is.

Floyd can only dream of being the man Ali was and if he dreams he's Ali, he better wake up and apologies to him.
