I can understand why Hagler is saying this, it was a time when the HW title still meant something, there was mostly just one champ per division and Marciano won many of his championship bouts via KO.

Ultimately, in my opinion anyway, it comes down to, was beating a past prime Charles/Moore/Walcott better than beating past prime Pacquiao/DLH/Cotto/Mosley?

If you have to think about that its obvious you got no idea , Louis was totally shot and should not have been boxing , Marciano was prime .

Manny and Floyd are about the same in how far they have slipped , they just lose different assets which effects their game differently because of their styles , it was the worst Floyd Ive ever seen beating Manny and the least accurate and slowest they were both way past their best form , if Floyd was prime he annihilates Manny because the fight is at around 135 , any where from 135 to 147 at anytime Floyd schools Manny , and as far as fighters go Manny shts all over Joe Louis .

There is no comparison , Oscar Mosley Manny and Cotto are ATGs fighting from 126-154 , this is where the best fighters in history operate , these guys were nowhere near SHOT when Floyd fought them , Charles, Moore and Walcot where shot to sht and were not near the competition of Pac Oscar Cotto Mosley , go and look at the 3 preceding fights of all their fights leading into Floyd and then go look at the preceding 3 fights of the HWs .

Especially when MayBeatHer has lost 4 fights and could realistically been DQd against Ortiz for a fifth. Turd Maywrather is junk.

That's pretty flat if Heavy Weights is the best Hagler could come up with.

" as far as fighters go Manny shts all over Joe Louis" Sorry; you could not be more wrong on this one. Nobody "shts" Joe Louis. Nobody - ever. Louis was so great, that at a time in America, when lynchings were still all to common, at a time in America when blacks were segregated in so many aspects of life, at a time in America when the achievements of many successful black Americans were given little if any credit; Joe Louis was so clearly dominant in boxing that he became America's hero. Joe Louis transcended the color line not because he was handsome, not because he was polite, and certainly not because he defeated white opponent after white opponent. Joe Louis became America's hero because the American people as a whole had been taking an economic beating (Great Depression) that pushed them to the brink of their endurance, and at this very period in American history, Louis emerged as an athlete so talented and masterful that he was not only able to succeed at the highest levels of his sport but also do so in a style that was undeniable and a thing of beauty as well as the mark of a winner to such an extent that a still very racist America adopted Joe Louis as the symbol of a nation and a people who could and would fight back and win despite every and any challenge. Nothing could stop the American people as a whole from identifying with Joe Louis and wanting to succeed as had Joe done time and again year after year despite the challenges which he faced.

To a certain degree this discussion is similar to the ongoing discussions about female tennis champions. Yes, they are great within their own context. But they compete in a league with restricted access (like juniors or wheelchair tennis). To say that Serena Williams is greater than Roger Federer is a borderline ******ity, born in some feminist brain. By the same token, Mayweather can't be better than Marciano. Hagler has a good point...
