Minor point? Had HBO used its programming touting Ward's return and a fight with GGG it surely that fight would be more anticipated. That's how HBO has garnered interest in all its fights for years.

If HBO had used the fight game to push this fight I'm sure fans would be more excited.

So I get you like to talk about "profitability" in a vacuum, but then you call HBO using its shows to hype this fight a "minor quibble that doesn't affect anything".

    Very confusing opinions from you.

GOLOVKIN AND HIS TEAM HAVE MADE IT VERY CLEAR THAT THEY WILL NOT MOVE UP OR DOWN FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PPV FIGHT. SO FORGET ABOUT THIS FIGHT HAPPENING ON REGULAR PPV, IT JUST AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!

      Clear enough for you?
my point is the fight may NEVER be a PPV fight because both guys are not able to sell on PPV. that doesn't mean the fight shouldn't happen.

Wasn't it loeffler himself who said that the fight doesn't make financial sense???

Not to mention that Golovkin has repeatedly stated that HE WILL NOT MOVE UP FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PPV FIGHT. People seem to be very willing to ignore the fact that Golovkin must fight in a higher division which is not to his advantage. How about if the fight is on regular HBO that Ward comes down to 160 instead? That seems fair to me. It's a good trade off.
a ppv fight doesnt have to sell 1 mill ppvs to make a profit out of it, but if on top of that we also bring the weight excuse then it will really be hard to make..
again even on regular hbo fights you can make big purses... plus you can try to sell ppvs on the UK "ggg vs the man who outclassed froch" ...
profit for this fight should not be an excuse , but then again i understand ggg if he fights a lesser opponent for less money...

Again numbers are meaningless unless we understand what the goals for it were. I'm sure Roc Nation wasn't expecting 10 million viewers
No expectations for the fight were ever made public. Anything Roc Nation was to say now I would take with a grain of salt.

You can't just look at profitability from one vantage point. You made the argument so at least look at it from all perspectives and consider those when looking at why HBO is not keen on this fight.

The risk is on GGG because he has yet to defeat a fighter as accomplished as ward.
So you are comparing Ward with Bradley?

Ward and GGG are irrelevant to HBO's long term profitability. HBO will be around long after both fighters are retired and being brought out for the occasional special event. Short term, GGG will continue to be just as popular as a middleweight even if he was to lose to Ward. If Ward was to lose to GGG on the other hand, his value would plummet. It would be almost as bad as GGG losing to Cotto. Not quite as bad because no one gives Cotto the slightest chance that Cotto could win while about half give GGG a chance of beating Ward. But it would still cause him serious damage. Ward would have to fight Kovalev immediately after if he lost to Golovkin. And losing both back to back would basically send Ward into retirement.

because he requires hbo to buy the fight so he can cover his costs, pay his fighter and make a profit himself. he's not like al haymon or jay-z who have an infinite supply of money coming in from outside of boxing

They both want to fight each other it's just that it makes much more sense next year versus now especially considered Ward has been away for so long. They'll fight eventually, GGG just needs his "big" fight or at least unifications and Ward needs to get back into his groove and back in the media.

Side note: it's always funny to me that certain people claim someone is a bum but only offer the greatest fighter possible that could potentially beat them. "Pacquiao is a bum, Mayweather will beat him!" "Golovkin is a bum, Ward will beat him!" Ok, those are two really fucking good fighters, no shame losing there. If that's the only person that can beat him must not be a bum. Likewise, Floyd wouldn't have been a bum if he lost to Pac and Ward wouldn't be a bum if he lost to Golovkin. All solid fighters. It's a compliment that the only person people say can likely beat Golovkin is the undefeated Gold Medalist and former pound-4-pound #2 fighter on the planet who is a weight class above him. It's like saying Rigondeaux is a bum because he'd lose to Nicholas Walters or some crap.
That's exactly right. I like GGG. I like his take no prisoners, come forward fighting style, but some of these GGG fans, dare I say, are a tad bit worse than pacquiao fans.

Lol exactly. And he doesn't even hide that he is happy when a PBC show or a fighter he doesn't like gets bad ratings. It's bad for the sport but whatever, he is happy because he chose his side set it in stone and don't care about the sport in general. A Golovkin fan first not boxing fan.
