Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Jim Lampley says he was contacted by the lawyer for WBA Super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) who told him that Ward is willing to fight WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) for a fight.

Presumably, Golovkin would have to move up to super middleweight to face Ward at either a catch-weight or at the full weight in order for the fight to happen.

Lampley believes that Andre Ward or Carl Froch, two of the top super middleweights in the division, might be the direction for Golovkin to go in if he can’t get the top names at middleweight [160] to agree to fight him. Golovkin obviously would prefer to fight Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez than Ward, because it would likely be a much bigger fight in terms of money and fan interest. Fights against Cotto and Canelo would be pay-per-view fights on HBO. It’s unclear whether a Golovkin-Ward fight would sell on HBO pay-per-view.

It’s quite possible it would bring in a very, very low number of pay-per-view buys, because neither Ward nor Golovkin have ever fought on pay-per-view before. Ward’s situation is further hurt by his inactivity. Ward hasn’t fought since last year in November when he beat Edwin Rodriguez. In the last two years, Ward has fought just once per year. He fought one time in 2012 and once in 2013. In contrast, Golovkin fought four times in 2013, and three times in 2013.

“If he can’t get a fight at 160, maybe he has to go to 168 a Carl Froch,” Lampley said to HBO. “A representative from Andre Ward’s camp sent me a note this morning that Andre wants to fight him. He’ll fight him anywhere, anyplace, and anytime. A fight against Andre Ward in Southern California would be very marketable. Ward’s lawyer sent me an e-mail today saying he’ll fight him wherever,” Lampley said.

Yup ya just give him a pass.

        • Ward is the last person to tell people to stop lying, whether he is right or not. He's lied a lot.

Odd. Cotto fights in NY he's puerto rican. Canelo fights in texas & cali hes mexican. GGG fights in cali hes not even american (sorta mexican i guess lol) Bhop fights at "home" in atlantic city???

I get where you are coming from, but even here in the states a west coast guy fighting in the east coast would be considered "away from home"

Well a lot of the fighters that you mentioned have made them places their "home" so to speak because of money and fanbase reasons.

Its like cotto v geale, cotto had the home ground advantage in NY but I do understand what you are saying.

Boxing is an international sport. Home 'advantage' is determined by the flag flying above the arena or stadium.

In pro hockey, another international sport, you can have two Canadian teams playing - one from Montreal playing another in Vancouver and the Vancouver team is the home team. But if it is an international tournament, as the Super Six was, if the Montreal Canadiens are playing in Vancouver against Russia, it is considered a Canadian home game.

Note: I understand why Americans have difficulty understanding the concept. After all, they think the team who wins the 'World Series' in baseball is actually the World Champion. Same thing with their other major sports like football and basketball. Americans think the world revolves around them.

At 168: Degale, Badou Jack, Groves, Gilberto Ramirez. At 175: Beterbiev, Fonfara, Stevenson, and Kovalev. What are GGG's options at 160, without Roc Nation or Haymon?
RN is already losing the money on Ward. Fronting the money doesn't mean they won't make it back if the ppv does well, and they're supposed to be experts and promoting big events.

At 168, Ward's not getting PBC fighters. If he wants DeGale or Groves he'll need to travel to the UK and be the B-side because they're the bigger draws and can make more money without him then he makes on his own. Arum has no reason to pimp out Rameriz or Hart for Ward, they're both young investments.

Bottom line, nobody has any incentive to fight Ward. He's a difficult fight because his natural talents and negative style. He doesn't draw big money because his performances generally lack action.

Golovkin does draw fans (money). If Ward wants a guy who draws to move up in weight and fight him, when he's not drawing money, then that's a B-side in a big way.
