UK has a population much smaller than the US and is a very developed country without a prominent underclass (hence most of their fighters take up boxing by choice... not desperation/failure at other things in life).

It's quite an enigma for maintaining it's presence for so long.
Shame most of their boxingscene representitives are very annoying turds.

Absolutely false, I'd go so far as to say the UK has as many if not more sports to compete with each other within a smaller population. America tends to ignore worldwide sports in favour of homegrown sports. It also helps than no one area is too far from another people support their own for the most part.

Tennis, Cricket, Football, UFC, Athletics, Formula 1, Rugby, Golf hell even the boat race in the UK are bigger than most boxing events. Fans of boxers in the UK tend to be fans of the guy rather than the sport. Plenty of fighters never built up a decent fanbase in the UK because they were boring to watch or charismatic.

Johnny Nelson, Glen McCrory, Clinton Woods, Junior Witter, Robin Reid, Duke McKenzie. Never built up a decent fan base. In the UK it is all about the character and self promotion then the talent when it comes to boxing its why Bruno, Cooper etc were so popular.

Americans seem to be passionate about NFL, I'll say that much, but it doesn't flow over to boxing. No idea why to be honest.

NFL, NBA and so on are sports where the majority of the participants are American, so it's more of an even affair. It's more fun to watch that way.

In boxing, however, the nationality pool is a factor, with most fights being mismatches. Americans already know that the American will beat the Mexican, Puerto Rican, the Brit and so on. We are a superior boxing nation and it's been proven through the decades.

US boxing actually isn't in a great space right now generally, and they just lost another world title to a Swede at the weekend.

There's only 1 or 2 (if you include Bradley) americans on the pound for pound list... The rest is Pinoy, Ukrainian, Mexico, England, Cuba, Russian, Nicaragua...

If russia became all metrosexual and found such behavior acceptable for males we'd probably be losing at basketball too

Ward needs/should start fighting in San Francisco AND Oakland. Open up Cow Palace for boxing again.

I don't think he realizes just how popular The premier league is...

But I agree with his premise. The UK doesn't produce as much fighters as the US. So when a few end up emerging from the pack, like Froch, Groves, Brook, Prince Naseem, Khan etc. It's easier to get behind those guys. They don't have as much competition locally as the American fighters do.

Whereas Ward is treated as a dime a dozen here.
