hbo has nothing to do with his popularity in mexico, and he is still with televisa...
when it comes to haters nothing that he ever does will change it...
he will always have haters while still relevant , but he has way more followers...
it comes with the package...Comment

Sorry dude but the title of this thread is why is Canelo more popular than JMM?
Not why is Canelo more popular than JMM in Mexico. And HBO had everything to do with his popularity outside of Mexico. I'm not sure that he is still with Televisa so I won't dispute that but I do remember they had a well publicized breakup over an article that was written in which Canelo was being accused of using a retired Mexican boxer as a punching bag in some sparing matches. And if memory serves me well that boxer died soon after of brain damage.Comment

Marquez is a boxing technician, hailing from "the nation of blood and guts warriors"; really simple as that. In his perfect world, he'd fight off of the back foot, and that's just not a style that seems to draw interest. What is the variable(s) that enable Canelo to headline his own shows against an Angulo and do 350k, while Marquez can't headline against a guy like Bradley and crack 200k?
In general, I think it's safe to say Canelo can do bigger numbers than Marquez with similar opponents.
Why? Marquez is way more exciting, more skilled, has been on the bigger stage more... Marquez is everything a Mexican boxer should be... Although he falls more in the Mexican school of boxing that focuses on precision boxing/punching/counterpunching, than the Mexican school that focuses on inside fighting.Comment

jmm doesn't have real fans.
mexicans just "borrow" him when they want to see a mexican kick pac's ass to revenge their real fave the babyface assassin and the "dumb indian" from tj.
