    • B]Why does Manny get a pass?[/B] Why is he not held to the same standard as Floyd?

      June 10, 2014:

      By Chris Williams:

Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is complaining that Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KO’s) is asking for $20 million for a fifth fight against Pacquiao in November, and that Marquez’s request is a show stopper. Roach says that a reasonable amount for Marquez to make for the fight is $10 million only, according to thesweetscience.com. But with Marquez asking for $20 million, it means that a fight can’t take place between them.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently said that Pacquiao will be getting around $30 million for his fights. If this is true, it means that there’s a potential $40 million pot of money that can be divided up for a 5th Pacquiao-Marquez fight. If you divide the money equally, then each fighter can walk away with $20 million, and Pacquiao would get his chance of trying to avenge his loss to Marquez.

Marquez received the short end of a 76/24 split in the last fight he had with Pacquiao in 2012, and that was a fight that brought in close to 1 million pay-per-view buys. Since then, Pacquiao has seen his PPV totals tank in fights against Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley, with neither fight bringing in even 900,000 PPV buys.

This means that Pacquiao absolutely needs Marquez to bring in the huge amount of buys unless Arum can get someone like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for Pacquiao, which obviously isn’t going to happen because Canelo won’t agree to fight Pacquiao at a catch-weight like Roach and his personal adviser Michael Koncz wants. There won’t be a Pacquiao-Canelo fight, ever. Canelo is even bigger than WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, and Pacquiao isn’t rushing in to face Cotto now due to him fighting at middleweight.

With Marquez wanting an equal split of the purse with Pacquiao this time around, Roach says that IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Danny Garcia would be a good option for Pacquiao. Arum would like Amir Khan for Pac, but Roach doesn’t like that option. He thinks Khan holds too much.

The reality here is unless Pacquiao gives Marquez what he’s asking for in terms of equal money, he’s not going to take the fight. Marquez brings in his Mexican fans for the PPV fights with Pacquiao, and it’s quite possible that the majority of the PPV buys for the Pacquiao-Marquez fights are actually fans of Marquez. That’s obviously why he’s asking for an equal split this time around instead of the 76-24 split the last time he fought Pacquiao.

        • These Pacquiao fans are bugging acting like Floyd is scared of Pacquiao. Not even HBO will gamble on Manny winning.

I don't know. It's probably much lower than when he's fighting Manny! So I guess what you're saying is that even if you fight a guy 4 times, and you have 1 draw, and 1 KO win, you should not expect to be anywhere near 60/40, because the other guy is the draw. I totally agree!

another biased article from a floyd fanboy. i stopped reading after the first sentence. waste of time.

how much did maidana get from his 2nd fight with floydweather compared to marquez, rios, bradley vs pac? differences are huge. so stop this nonsense. it's general knowledge that pac's opponents make more than greedy mayweather's.

He kept all ppv revenue generated from his country along with a share of US ppv revenue so he made out with over 7 mil for rematch that's why he off enjoying his vacation

                  From Bad Left Hook:

Dan Rafael of ESPN reports that Miguel Cotto will make a career-best $8 million purse on Saturday night against Floyd Mayweather Jr, plus upside money from the HBO pay-per-view sales.

Mayweather's purse total will be handed in on Thursday, but keep in mind that Mayweather makes far more than just his purse, as he gets a big cut of PPV money, plus as he's said before, basically a cut of everything sold during the event, from hot dogs and beer to t-shirts and hats. It's the Bruce Springsteen deal.

Manny Pacquiao absolutely makes more than his Nevada pay sheets read, as he's been guaranteed $20 million-plus for his recent fights, but it's a goofy piece of side note trivia that as far as I recall, Cotto's $8 million purse is actually higher than the Nevada commission purse figure Pacquiao has made in any fight to date.

Pacquiao had a $6 million purse against Mosley, and the same figure when he faced Juan Manuel Marquez. His guarantees for those fights were $20 and $22 million. Both Marquez and Mosley were paid $5 million for their fights with Manny, and Mosley was paid $7 million for his fight with Mayweather in 2010.

So this makes Cotto, not even counting the PPV upside, the highest-paid opponent for either fighter, besides Oscar De La Hoya, who was the A-side in his fights with Floyd and Manny.

Cotto made a $4 million purse when he fought Pacquiao in November 2009, and had a 35% share of the PPV pot.
