If Wlad won, it would be a 'well, guess there's nobody else to give it to and he had unified for the first time since Tyson-Douglas-Evander-Bowe (when it got fragmented again).........but it wouldn't be on quality of opposition. Unless he gets clipped, that should be about 8 rounds of easy work for Wlad. I wouldn't vote for him 'just because'.
In case someone didn't explain, Lennox Lewis was 'The Man who beat the man who beat the man........" all the way back to to John Sullivan in 1885.....it's not a fan poll, it's not a magazine list, it's the LINEAGE OF THE TITLE........When Lewis fought Vitali, it was for the WBC HW Title. It was the belt that could be traced all the way back........
Vitali, after losing to Lennox and that being the only title Lewis, the LINEAL champion, had to relinquish.
When Lennox decided to relinquish, the WBC belt was on the line for Vitali, the heir apparent, in a title fight with Corries Sanders. Shortly after winning, Vitali pseudo-retired due to injury leaving no clear 'Lineal' champion.
So while Wlad is the Universally recognized holder of the HW title and Ring Champion, he never faced an opponent to give him lineage. That's why it would be a big deal.
Nobody 'decided' this...........it's a history thing.........learn about it. It's why most people didn't even know who Ernie Terrel was (WBA HW Champion) when he and Ali fought to unify..........whos was the lineal? Ali of course.....
All belts do this. That's why people argue about Manny and Floyd, Manny had 8 titles in 8 classes (one is actually not real, but who reallly cares), Floyd is a a 5 division champion.
HOWEVER, Mayweather holds 'LINEAL' at 130, 135, 147 and 154, the only miss was when Hatton/Tsyzu would not fght him at 140. And he tried twice to make those fights while at the weight.......
Pacquaio is lineal at 112,126, 130 and 140. He beat the lineal champions for those belts.........and his 154 title in not legit like Mayweather's is......
Manny did beat the lineal guy at 140, Ricky Hatton, after Floyd KO'd him already.............but that fight wasn't for the 140 title, it was for the 147 title, so that's how many kept it.
So that's just to give you extreme examples of why beating Gatti, despite being the best at 140 didn't make Floyd the 'Lineal' champion as it shouldn't have, and Manny beating Margarito at 154, when neither had even fought in the weight class (except a loss and a draw by Margarito much earlier), should not have been for the title....
When WBA and WBC were still the only two titles, Leonard was the Lineal, but Hearns fighting him cleared up any questions. That's why sanctioning bodies ruin this stuff........."peeleft:
