Floyd became popular because everytime the haters said he would lose he kept on winning which in turn was the driving force behind the unlimited hate. His villain persona also helped him especially against fighters like Gatti and Oscar who the general public adored tremendously.
Let's not forget about his undeniable skills and talent. The man can box, punch with both hands, fight on the inside, in a phone booth, from a distance, using offensive under Roger, and being defensive under Floyd Sr.
The fact that Mayweather always fought a guy coming off of a win also helped.

The fact that Mayweather left Bob Arum was probably the biggest reason for him blowing up. You see, most of you cats don't realize that Bob Arum hinders fighters. Oscar was with Bob, he left and blew up. Mayweather was with Bob, he left and blew up. Cotto was with Bob, he left and blew up. Do you see the pattern?

As soon as Mayweather left, He fought Oscar. As soon as Cotto left, he fought Cotto. So now, we wonder why the Pac fight isn't getting made, hmmmm, i'll let you guys think about that for a minute.

It was already clear back in the late 90's that Floyd was the heir apparent to Roy Jones.

Dude has been in the top ten p4p since 1998 but he couldn't get the fights he wanted under Top Rank...he knew wins over ODLH and Mosely were the fights that would skyrocket him past being just a treat for purists and hardcore fans

His tone started to change around 03-05 when Ward-Gatti were getting big checks in fights just being two top ten junior welterweights when he was a champion for 5 years start by '03 and I understood his plight I knew as an 11 year old watching in the Olympics that he would be a special fighter but that doesn't always bring you the big bucks
You're right. And the Oscar fight made him a star. Floyd was also fortunate in that he was able to follow up the Oscar fight with Hatton. And he was able to redeem himself (compared to the somewhat disappointing Mayweather-Oscar) with a memorable TKO.

I remember when Floyd first called Oscar out. It was in 2002, I believe, on ESPN sometime around the Castillo fights. And I remember thinking he was completely out of his mind. Crazy to think he's still on top now.

you have no idea what you are saying. he can punch with both hands? he has no power in either hand. cotto blew up after leaving top rank? he's had almost all his fights with top rank. top rank brought him to stardom. oscar was already hugely popular as well. floyd priced himself out of the oscar fight when he was with arum demanding 20 million so he could get out of his contract and duck margarito then he happily accepted 10 million to fight hoya after he left. if he had fought hoya when he was with top rank he would be just as popular but then he would of had to fight margarito and he didn't want to do that...please pay more attention to things.

Around $5 mill goes to all the other fighters purses
At least $10 mill goes to advertising and marketing the fight. A couple more million for travel expenses and promotional tour.
The entire event also has to be insured.

Its been reported numerous places that he needed to sell 1.2 million to break even. He didn't come close either fights last year.

Factor in Uncle Sam taking 40%, and Al Haymon taking 15% and Floyd takes home less than Pacquiao, Wlad, Cotto and probably Canelo at the end of the year.
I didn't realize that you were a world traveler. You had to travel to the ends of the earth twice to come up with this ridiculous theory.

You are full of *****e - A fighter knowing his worth is the worst thing to promoters. If Arum did not try to rob his fighters, then FMJ would have been with him. FMJ did not price himself out. Arum ****ed up. Plain and simple. He had the best fighter in the world and lost him for $750,000. He lacked vision on how to market FMJ. Stop making *****e up.

but floyd didn't know his worth. i can prove this to you easily. he demanded 20 million when he was with arum to fight hoya. arum knew he wasn't worth that much. hoya knew he wasn't worth that much and so did floyd because he accepted 10 million to fight hoya after leaving. that's called pricing yourself out if you didn't know. floyd just wanted to leave top rank and arum let him because he knew floyd was being unreasonable and wouldn't have fought any of his guys like margarito. if you have the best fighter in the world but he won't fight then you don't have the best fighter in the world.

Staying undefeated and won the Oscar De La Hoya lottery. Oscar made a bunch of careers.
