Floyd was a sensational boxer and no one wanted to watch him. Floyd became an ignorant moron obnoxiously flaunting his wealth and he grew into the biggest draw in the sport.

Haymon marketed him in a way that appealed to idiots. And as the old saying goes, no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.
Couldnt draw ****?? he was doing 300-400k before Oscar...........WHO IS DOING THAT NOW???????????

$5 mill goes to GBP to promote it
Around $5 mill goes to all the other fighters purses
At least $10 mill goes to advertising and marketing the fight. A couple more million for travel expenses and promotional tour.
The entire event also has to be insured.

Its been reported numerous places that he needed to sell 1.2 million to break even. He didn't come close either fights last year.

Factor in Uncle Sam taking 40%, and Al Haymon taking 15% and Floyd takes home less than Pacquiao, Wlad, Cotto and probably Canelo at the end of the year.
You think Mayweather pays for everything out of his purse?

First he has a family legacy in boxing - a lot of people knew who Roger was because of his career - I didn't know much of Sr. but, for whatever it's worth, the Mayweather name had already been embedded in the boxing consciousness before Floyd started out.

He was a good AM and fought in the last summer Olympics to be held in the US. Most of those games were shown at times that Americans could watch and Mayweather was one of the athletes to look out for, among others.

These casual sports fans/ people who saw him then might not have immediately followed him as he became pro but through longevity, things come back around, and all of a sudden his name starts making noise because of his boxing and people remember you.

and then there are the people who have come to know him just through his pro career and other people can do better than I can listing his career accomplishments and how that has helped him build fame. It wasn't some overnight thing or coincidence.

How in the hell did Floyd become so popular???

We agree that by all accounts, to casuals he should be boring as hell inside the ring. Defensive style, doesnt go for the KO, no power, most of his fights are one-sided, throws one punch at a time, puts viewers to sleep...

Career wise, he more known today for his cherry picking ways then giving the fans the fights we want. A Pac fight isnt the first time Floyd refused to give the fans what we want. And he aint the first the first guy to beat Hoya. Shane got to a higher level when he did that but never close to what Floyd is.

Outside the ring, the guy is a complete mess. He cant express himself, is socially awkward, is not enigmatic or self-aware, most people dont a have a single good thing to say about him, I can go on and on before we even get to his criminal record.

Yes he flashes money and that might make a reality tv episode interesting. One episode. Is that all??? If Rigo started throwing money around would HBO want him back on air?

I honestly dont get it. It makes no sense.

So how do ya'll think he made it to the top?
A mixture of many things really, hes won all of his fights so people are always intrigued on whether or not the next opponent can "crack the code", hes a multi-division world champion and has been recognised as boxings P4P #1 for many years so is respected for being considered the best of his sport.

Hes also done a great job of promoting himself over the years, not so much for good but more so for playing the villain, hes talked trash over the years and come across as arrogant and ****y (or he actually just is arrogant and ****y - you choose) so many people have tuned into his fights hoping to see him lose - I think this has also gained him fans in a way though, because he had been doing this for years and kept winning, many people become fans of him because they respected him for backing up the talk by getting the win under his belt every time.

Obviously beating DLH and getting the most PPV buys of all time played a big part in putting his name out their too - because Oscar was the PPV king at the time.

He has never lost a fight and in the majority of those fights a world title was on the line. He is the best fighter in the world and paying customers like to see the best in action even if they are sometimes boring. If you bet $1000 on Mayweather every time he fought he would have made you lots of money. I really don't think he is boring. I enjoy watching him display his speed and skill and his timing, punching accuracy and ring smarts. He is not a constant clincher or wrestler or mauler and I like that too. I have never paid a dime to watch him fight live but I very much enjoy watching him fight for free a week later.
