Because kovalev was excellent with his feints and distance. the jabs to the body also killed BHOP.
Hopkins really dropped the ball on this one

Dude, chill out! What are you high?
Hopkins is 49, I think maybe he's done alright considering. He managed to survive 12 rounds! That in itself is an extraordinary achievement, I still can't believe it.
And then look at his opponent. Among the most dangerous fighters in boxing history.
He can be forgiven if he wasn't able to meet your expectations.
I don't think Hopkins survived it was just that Kova was pacing himself. I think Kova could've finished him in the first 4 to be honest with you especially when we realized that Bhop couldn't clinch and roughhouse him. Serghey is just too strong and too focused on the inside for Bhop to get an upper hand on him legally or illegally.Comment

Because he would risk getting countered by a fast kovalev right hand. Kovalev has excellent timing. He caught silakh with a sneaky right hand while silakh was throwing a jab.Dude I picked Kovalev to steamroll him even before it was signed. That's not the point though. The point is that Bhop didn't throw his jab at ALL and he's got a good one. Like I said not saying he was going to win doing that but at least he could've slept better after the loss knowing that he's done everything he could've done.Comment

I remember that fight but the way Hopkins tucks his chin and dives with his head when he throws punches going forward I'd be damned but I can't remember the last time he was countered. Yet he was clobbered flush 2 dozen times playing defense on the ropes.Comment

Hopkins doesn't like being hit. There was always a possibility of this happening. BHop was hoping he could go in there slow the pace down and eeak out a decision.Comment

What I thought was funny too was JDJ screaming, he's too slow, hit him to the body, he's too old. I think it was more so directed at Hopkins just to mess with him mentally during the rounds as opposed to giving Kovalev instructions.Comment
