But Mayweather is the greatest defensive fighter we have ever seen. He approaches not getting hit with the mental dexterity of a savant, and is head and shoulders beyond anyone else in the history of the sport.
It was shocking to see Shane Mosley actually hit him cleanly, let alone rock him badly. But all Mayweather did for the rest of the night was become Mariano Rivera, and close him out.

Whatever your feelings on Floyd, he's an unquestioned all-time great and one of the greatest fighters to have ever lived.

He's an extremely athletic blend of Roy Jones and James Toney, with an emphasis on defense first and foremost.
All of those with the exception of Johnson have better defense in my humble, but accurate opinion. Sweet Pea, Toney, and Nicolino especially. Floyd is great because he has few flaws and is a well rounded fighter with high IQ but like RJJ he depends alot on athleticism to be effective, true defensive savants don't. Another thing that brings his stock down is that in order for him to be statisically dominant defensively, he has to sacrifice offense to do it. Toney, Sugar, Nicolino, Willie all had other-worldly defense but could still land combinations through it and get away unscathed.

'wraps, The Objective One, has spoken.

    • Nah, Mayweather is a wannabe Joe Gans. At the end of the day he's a copy cat.

      • Newbies..........

This video is for all of you idiots who just started watching boxing, when Floyd became his own Boss. Whitaker is the greatest defender ever for a few reasons. You couldn't hit him consistently with a jab. You couldn't hit him consistently to the body, and he did it against the best. James Toney, Mayweather, and Pep were all exceptional defenders, with one thing in common, they didn't have whitaker's legs. He had legs of gold like Michael Jordan had hands of gold. His hands were HUGE. Pea legs were his greatest physical gift.

Others who have used Floyd's defense and actually took on relatively risky opponents were defeated. While it's a very good defensive tactic used by Floyd, it can be beat if he faced the right fighter ..... but we all know that Floyd says that he is entitled not to face those type of opponents and is entitled to put his opponents at a disadvantage (AKA - CW, pillow gloves ....)
I guess when Floyd was laying hands on Mosley, that wasn't a concern for his corner or had nothing to do with his endurance?

          • nope. Toney is a better defensive fighter than him. he cant reach the "el radar" benitez level resume wise. he isnt near the same sentence, paragraph as pernel.

            • What boxing aficionados understand about Floyd is his defense isn't just the Philly shell. It's many many different facets to it. His control of distance, his jab, his defensive responsibility whenever he commits to a punch, the built in defense within his offense and his ability to adjust to punches ALONG with the Philly shell and his otherworldly reflexes all lead to a fighter that has the widest compubox stats in history.

              • That's not a reach at all. Floyd is quite possibly the best defensive fighter of all time. If you disagree, simply name a fighter who was better. Name one.
