promotional issues. goossen is a very good "entry level" promotor. he gets you on the networks [hbo and showtime,] if you're good enough. he really cannot promote major ppv. he doesn't have that kind of muscle.
ward is currently trying to get out of a pretty long contract with goossen. it's not working. he signed an idiotic deal if it was his plan to get out of it.
ward thinks, inappropriately or otherwise, that he's on the verge of becoming a ppv level fighter. he made 2 million against rodriguez. to make more than that, you basically have to fight on ppv. for comparison, martinez made less than that on ppv against chavez.
he also has a job with hbo as a commentator, and though it's only part time, i'm sure it gets him six figures.
he stays in shape, has no bad habits. the layoffs had some benefit when he had injuries. the biased fanboys in the thread probably don't even know this, but ward also broke two bones in his hand in the froch fight, and had surgery to repair a blown shoulder that had been giving him issues since he was a teenager.
he's had a lot working against getting him back in the ring, but he's also made some very dumb moves himself.
