Vargas chose to go to war at times with a heavy handed fighter who could box as well as punch and fight dirty.

    In short, a real pro.

People tend to think of Tito as just a puncher but he could be very patient before unleashing the bombs.
I have no idea where this notion that he wasn't a skilled boxer comes from. Maybe the fact that he wasn't so defensive minded but as far as basic classic boxing technique he was very good, offensive minded, and hit like train.

Cotto is probably the only current PR that doesn't throw low blows. It is how they train.

        Zab Judah disagrees.

Vargas got caught early and never recovered, plus he was to young and inexperienced. Trinidad was in his prime and a force.

          Wake up that morning?

          Seriously,

Tito was too quick, too strong and too much power for Vargas. That was all. You could not brawl with Tito like that, ATG power on both hands and he could also box.

Fail + fail = Brutal KO

I feel his biggest mistake was allowing himself to get hurt with the left hook right off the bat in the first round. This put him in the hole and made it uphill from that point on.
He should have been a bit more guarded and measured to begin the fight. He should have boxed more and used his jabs,..and then puchned in spots without getting too greedy.
That would have been a good first step.
But Tito was at the top of his game,..and was also a beast at 154lbs. He had outgrown the welterweight division a couple years prior.

Agreed on all counts (although I thought he eked it out versus Winky -- admittedly, I only watched that fight once).

Trinidad was much quicker than Vargas and I think people slept on Tito's quickness while overlooking how mediocre Vargas' hand speed was.

I always felt Vargas and David Reid needed more experience before fighting Tito. It ruined David Reid.

Vargas said it best himself and its exactly what happened. He said he was the better boxer and his plan was to outbox him but once he got dropped, he felt like he was behind and had to fight with him. Even when he came back even in the fight, he said he still felt like he was behind and that he shouldve went back to boxing after that. I think he couldve won if he didnt let his ego get to him and go toe to toe

Way too young and inexperienced, he should have never taken that kinda fight so early in his career. That's what he did wrong.
