What did Fernando Vargas do wrong in the Felix Trinidad fight?

I feel his biggest mistake was allowing himself to get hurt with the left hook right off the bat in the first round. This put him in the hole and made it uphill from that point on.
He should have been a bit more guarded and measured to begin the fight. He should have boxed more and used his jabs,..and then puchned in spots without getting too greedy.
That would have been a good first step.
But Tito was at the top of his game,..and was also a beast at 154lbs. He had outgrown the welterweight division a couple years prior.

Trinidad was much quicker than Vargas and I think people slept on Tito's quickness while overlooking how mediocre Vargas' hand speed was.

Vargas said it best himself and its exactly what happened. He said he was the better boxer and his plan was to outbox him but once he got dropped, he felt like he was behind and had to fight with him. Even when he came back even in the fight, he said he still felt like he was behind and that he shouldve went back to boxing after that. I think he couldve won if he didnt let his ego get to him and go toe to toe
