I think its both. Cotto looked very good back with Roach while Sergio may have finally hit the point where he lost some of his athletecism which means he is going to eat shots he used to not get hit with. he used to get hit even with it so....

Great post. Was Martinez at his best? No. That doesn't change the fact that Cotto still took a huge risk and had to fight a great fight. I imagine very few, if any, expected the complete domination we saw.

Yea I think that's what the little kids that are making the threads that Martinez was some handicapped invalid don't understand.

Again, what impressed me the most was Cotto just simply outboxing him. It wasn't just the fact that Martinez' knee wasn't 100% which by the way, he didn't complain about in the corner.

It was how easy Cotto was just out boxing him, and taking everything away from him. Martinez couldn't do anything, I mean nothing. His jab was ineffective, his left hand was being predicted over and over and Cotto was countering at will.

This was really a great performance, and let's remember what an injured Martinez did vs Murray and Jr...

This shows you that Cotto's boxing is on a complete other level. I really want to see Canelo vs Cotto now, IF Canelo can beat Lara.

A couple weeks ago it was..... "Austin Trout handed Cotto his ass, Martinez is going to destroy him!" now it's "Cotto has pimples, he's on roids"

Any analysis you do of the fight is null & void because he's injured.

It's like me analysing a fight where one competitor has a broken leg, doesn't mean **** & never will.
You act like Martinez got operated on in the locker room He only had 12 rounds to recover everyone, you heard it here first. Fuck the year + layoff he had to get it done

My question to everyone is, if you had this valuable piece of information (Sergio's 2 knee operations) why did you still pick him to beat Cotto? Ya'll are now salty that Cotto won and looked great doing so.

The best breakdown of the fight I have seen yet and I agree with every word.

Martinez has always made mistakes and had bad habits throughout his career but never faced a fighter like Cotto who has the skills and abilities to capitalize on them. The question is, would Sergio Martinez be able to overcome the flaws in his game if he was still at his athletic peak? He was such a gifted athlete that he could fight with his hands down and trap his opponents into walking into his left hand. I am not so sure I can say he would. The gap in skill and experience was huge from what I saw on Saturday night.

Sergio is the most over rated boxer I think I've ever seen. His best win was against a still inexperienced P. Williams and early in his career when he made a step up he got KO'd by Margarito.

Cotto took it right to Sergio's right shoulder and moved up and in and punched and no one has done that to him since Margarito. He beat a very disturbed Pavlik years ago and I think Pavlik beats him if he could have duplicated his stature when he was moving up prior to his troubles.
I don't see boxing or fighting skills in Sergio I see a good athlete who fought nobodies coming up and was moved very carefully by Debella with plenty of caution. They had GGG contract in front of them for a long time and could have unified the title but wanted NOTHING to do with a guy who could punch and was willing to attack aggressively.
Fighting someone like Junior just took cautious planning hell Junior doesn't even jab at all. Then Junior gets him in trouble after getting out boxed for 11 rounds!
Sorry Sergio fans this guy reminds me of a guy like Haye, they want the laurels and attention, this guy knew he couldn't perform but took the peoples money then backed out of the presser. He was a disgrace and it should be told he was not a high caliber competitor or a respectful man to the public. He took his money and ran, good bye! He did all these things and theres no debate about it. Call it as it came down, Cotto exposed this guy for what he was a B- boxer. Plus give credit to Freddy for finding the direction and focuss Cotto needed to train hard and fight hard. He deserves to be acknowledged for a great job preparing Cotto. Ray.

While I agree with this, I also think athleticism can't be over looked. I mean Roy Jones Jr made a career out of it and when his athletic abilities deteriorated he got knocked out.

Sergio was an incredible athlete, and I think the same thing happened to him. Again though, the boxing of Cotto was just ***in fantastic. He took Martinez to school, I was shocked at how easy he would doing what he wanted, when he wanted.

Sergio hadn't fought a smaller guy who was probably faster and the better boxer in a long time. Prime Cotto beats any version of Sergio.

                      Recover from the punch.......

I just read that Martinez went to the hospital and suffered a broken nose and possible concussion but nothing was wrong with his shoulder, knee or hand.

                      Hmmmm, but I'm the dumb.ass.
