I think if Sergio had healthy knees it would of been a really competitive entertaining fight. Cotto was coming up in weight and was a good 5 from the middleweight limit and Sergio was use to fighting in this weight against bigger stronger guys. He's been in wars. Yes, Cotto packs a good punch but to hurt him like that with a check left hook? I believe in the first round and to go stumbling the way he did without being able to throw any punching combinations was all really suspect to me.

It was not a check left hook Cotto was flat footed and caught Martinez clean on the temple which sent Martinez wobbly into the ropes. And before the big left landed Martinez got hit with a really good right in the middle of the ring. a few solid body shots a shot behind the ear and a shot behind the head pretty much sealed the night.

There is no fighter who can be off for over 1.5 years, start training camp while also rehabbing, off of nothing straight into a fight like this. Martinez was still rehabbing, had to not only hone his skills back to the level they were but also work into boxing shape at the same time trying to make weight. And then only spar with a south Paul fighter who is tall long and defensive, pretty much the exact opposite of the person your about to fight. Go into a fight with no timing and being unsure of your capabilities, due to your previous injuries. The simple fact is Martinez should have taken a tune up, Him and his entire team underestimated Cotto and were sure Martinez would just annihilate the smaller man, It didnt quite work out that way.
