Isn't a retirement a good way to get out of his HBO contract without having to fight GGG? What happens when a fighter retires while he's still under contract? The contract must become null and void after a certain period, like say a year. I can see Martinez "retiring" for a year, and then when his HBO contract is over he goes to Showtime to fight Canelo for mega bucks.

He's done enough to earn a retirement free of all the "ducking" talk on this forum. He doesn't have to fight GGG. Miguel will send him off well, he will be retired, on his back resting before the 12th round.

I'm on the census that supports his decision to retire. If he does perform poorly in the Cotto fight or feels like he can't keep up with the training regimen, he should retire. The man has fought hard and entertained for a long time - getting his due. As much as I'd love to see a Golovkin / Martinez fight, I'd be okay for him to hang them up.

I'd be highly disappointed if Martinez retired after Cotto. What's odd is two weeks ago, Sampson Lewkowicz said Martinez had three fights left and would definitely fight Golovkin.

Has there ever been a fighter who has retired on top and not left behind potential challengers? Sergio is a 40 year old who's perennially injured and has visibly deteriorated in his last few fights. He's chasing the money fights and not taking too many risks. Who can begrudge him that? Plus he's sexy as **** and i wont have a word said against him

I like GGG but his fans arent half getting annoying.

As much as I'd love to see him fight GGG I'm not going to fault a guy for retiring. He's been in some great fights and I'll always be a fan. I'd rather see him retire from boxing then see boxing retire him.

He's had a handful of defenses. He should do more. He started too late.

He has been great champion and has won some big fights and hasn't ducked anyone so it's time to retire if he feels like its time I guess he"ll see how jefe else after he fights cotto in New York it's gonna be a tough crowd for Martinez.
